possible bent valves??

right basically i bought a series 1 rs turbo as a project and decided to put the engine into my series 2 to get it going again as the engine in it had no compression. Anyway put the engine in out of the series 1, timed it all up correctly fitted etc and went to start it. Basically its trying to start but keeps popping back out of the metering head and sounds as though its about to start but just doesnt have enough. Basically the head that came with the series 1 engine had 4 new inlet valves fitted. Would i be correct in thinking that these maybe werent fitted correctly or that the exhaust valves could also be damaged. I know i should have checked but assumed all was good. Im out of ideas as to what it could be as im getting a good spark and also have fuel there and the timing is spot on.

Compression test it, any cylinder with a bent valve will generally show ZERO (or very very little) compression

Cheers mate. That was the plan for tomorrow. Doesnt look too good though. lol

Although now i think about it the metering head isnt connected directly to the inlet so still not sure how im getting a popping coming from it. Sounds just like the timing is 180 degrees out but not too sure how it could be.

hi its funny you say 180 degree out on timing someone i know had the same problem and when i looked at it i found he had put dizzy back wrong just took it off and turned it 180 degree inside so it was pointing at number 1 at tdc fired first time (its easy done)

Typically when you turn it over, its very obvious its bent the valves, you can hear the lack of compression when that happens

How do you mean it's not connected directly to the inlet? It has to be or it will never start as the metering flap won't depress. Does the metering flap move as your cranking it?Rick.

problem now solved. Did a compression test on it and number 1 cylinder didnt even register on the guage, number 2 saw 140psi, number 3 was 0 and number 4 read 0.
Pulled the head off and it was clear to see that the cylinders not registering had bent valves. Swapped for the head off my original engine and its now a runner. MOT on tuesday and then off to be set up all been well.
