s2 over heated today,please help

as above got home temp gauge was fine, in norm, but water pissed out the header tank blew the cap off, water was mega hot, what you think it could be? headgasket? waterpump? take thermostat out?

headgasket/thermostat is cream crackered, temp sensor faulty.
i'd take the thermostat out and drive without one for a little while, if it stops overheating then fault found.
