rs turbo lower arms

im having some trouble with the lower TCA's i have been told my my MOT station that there are 2 different types, rs/xr and base model

namely that rs turbo ones are shorter that base model ones,

i have found this to be true with quinn and hazel ones i fitted to my xr last year there was a noticeable dirrerence in length not massive but enough

anyway long and short of it all is that i have tryed 2 different makes now to no avail, quinn and hazel and true part neither of these seem right.

when my car was in for mot it was noted that they were worn and needed to be changed, so i changed the ones on my rst on true part ones knowing that quin and hazel were no good,
now the wheels tow out massively and the bloke at the mot station says that the long shaft is on its limit in the CV joint

could this simple be tracking? or is it a case of the arms being to long again?

i rely dont know what to do now, logically the arms being shorter makes sense because of the RS turbo having a thicker roll bar etc

can anyone help?

our local motorfactors list same part number for rs, xr and carb models, mate at work orderd some of his rs turbo reg then never fitted them as we scrapped his car and he bought another. i had the anit roll bar off his and put it on mine (orignally 1.3L) then fitted his lower TCA's no problems as all, so all i can suggest is try a different brand mate. we use Allparts if its any help heres their web address :

Only thing ive noticed is that s1 and s2 inner bushes are different....

But that maybe due to different makes as mentioned.

All mk3s had a rubber inner bush and all mk4s had a rose joint at the inner end too. Both have the same length though.

So u could fit a mk4 arm to a mk3, and is it better because of the rose joint???

all the same as far as i know, mine was a base model 1.1 and i fitted s1 ones couple of years ago and was fine

marky_g 25-11-2008 08:07 AM

yer in theory all the same but the casting that Quinn and Hazel and TruePart use are the same and give you nutty camber.

which i didn't have before and the car is lowered but only by 30mm

The angle where the anti-roll bar goes through the TCA is @ a different angle on the MK3 and MK4. You can (and some people probably have) make them fit, but they will not be right.

TBH, the MK3 arm is better anyway as the MK4 one always seems to destroy the small needle-roller bearings in the inner joint. @ least the MK3 ones simply get a new bush put in them.

MK3:
left = 6087889 = M81AB 3A052 AC
right = 6087888 = M81AB 3A053 AC

MK4:
left = 1637182 = 86AB 3079 A2A
right = 1637183 = 86AB 3078 A2A

Pattern manufacturers often list one part for more than one model / year combination. Does not always mean they are right. Most motor factor brake disc suppliers list 2wd Cossie discs as 260mm x 58mm. Bet they don't fit :top:
