they are a pattern part piston.

but Tim ( Grey S2, nms RST) used them for over 300 bhp with out issue.

I built a RST engine last month using them, but the C/R did come out abit higher than std mahle's.

thanks for that. i take it that standard rods fitted to these would be no good for about 18 psi.

Mahle = OEM
AE = Pattern

OE = Original Equipment (see above).

Thats why i asked, as this problem might not be down ti any fault of the actual piston.

am i right in thinking that with a good healthy engine you can only run a maximum of 18 psi with these pistons and standard rods. a bigger front mount cooler and actuator are fitted.

Your wrong,

As i said earlier in this thread, Tim used to run 300+bhp on these pistons.

And his car does 165+ mph, 12.7 1/4 miles, and often does trackdays.

I'm still using them in mine, runnin 245bhp at 1.5 bar boost with no issues....just had the head off as it happens and there are no signs of wear. To be honest most melt downs are due to poor mapping/fuelling, mine's on omex and mapped correctly i don't think it's the pistons that cause any problems

Was it standard compression Dave coz im running similar power and boost

As Jamie said it was probably down to detonation that your piston went bang

i was getting my figures from a performance ford mag about 6 months ago when they did a veview on the cvh turbo. it says the crank is tough as old boots but the rods will give at 19 psi boost. why do they print this if it is not true?

.. because they're not engineers and rely on chinese whispers (or opinions from 'expert tuners')..

I know reputable tuners who run at least 1.5 bar on standard rods (with machined pistons).. with zero problems in the last 20 years.

boost can not be related to stess on the engine unless they stat the turbo being used.

as a std T3 on 19 psi = 180bhp ish

19 psi on a T34 will be 250bhp ish, and so on.

these figures were based on a standard engine with standard turbo. I was going to go down the route of mahle pistons but i cant see the point now.

What was writin in the mag then was a very safe margin power range.

it was just a break down of the engine. it basically siad that the head flows pretty well as standard, the pistons were ok for 20ish psi, rods ok for 19 psi. the flywheels are know to fly off. ect. it basically said that if your going over 1 bar you need to start uprating the engine.
