Well the metal was changed on the later cars to german material iirc so some people say yes, the early cars were bad. Altho it could be simply down to use and older age compared to newer F/G/H cars that had an easy life.

Mines a dreg mate. i put a new floor in it cos it was absolutley shagged, the passenger footwell was more like fred flintstones car!

Its also been patched along the rear footwell in several places.

As an aside though my old one was an f reg and that was absolutly shot the rear passenger footwells werent attached to the rest of the car and the bulkhead was split from the battery tray to the fuse box, and when i took the sun roof out the roof was completely rotten as well! same really cos it looked mint from the outside lol

C and D reg Mk4's did seem a lot more prone to rusting. I know my brothers first D plate Onion was rotten as a pear and look how many D plate cars you see at show's, not many. I think here was more than a smidge of truth about the early cars being made from naff metal

I was told that too. And from experience late c to early e reg cars are the ones to take extra care when looking for rust

To be perfectly honest, i think the real reason behind the D plate late 86/early 87's going rotten is because they didn't have the inner arch liners etc that the later mk4's had.......just like we all know mk3's are prone to rotting the wings and all through, this is more than likely the reason why IMO.

my mate had a d plate xr3i and some guy with a mk3 xr31 told us at a show about a recession that year during which ford moved to save costs by buying and using cheaper materials (paint underseal metal etc etc) hence a few of them just fell apart after a while.

i had it down as an urban myth, however D plate S1's are rocking horse shit right enough
