s1 vs s2 engine diferences
i put this engine in 6 months ago on me 3i conversion i still cant get it running properly its sounds like its missing and wont tick over ive changed everythin with known working stuff from fuel pump tp metering unit plugs to dizzy, ive even took the loom i put in and put a s1 loom in as it works better with all the sensors in the dash, but ive got s2 ecus and engine i heard it dont make a difference, ive checked for air leaks while its running and off i thing i thought was weird is the dizzys turned fully towards the car till it hits the bolt but if i turn it back it gets worse,
i know the ecu is chipped but another thing is theres sensors ie cold start etc i dont know which is what
this is a late s2 engine with s1 loom
theres a cold start valve i assume blue connector goes on this
theres one under browny colour is this thermo time switch
and theres another on the sanwich/manifold whats this
then there the aux air device which one goes on this?
then theres one on a water pipe with a round white conector
and theres a green knock sensor but havent got the wiring for it i hear s1 didnt have them also i dont have a amal valve yet just plumbed comp to act and wireing plugis just hanging.
sorry for the long essay but want to give as much info as i can,i cant get it anywhere its all resprayed and ive spent so much more than i wanted to i could of bought a mint s1 by now , but i wanted a project to do but now its getting to me now if anybody near leics has experience and has a idea i dont mind paying someone to come over its just i cant get it anywhere, this is my last push before it gets the axe through the bonnet lol
anyhelp gladly appreciated thanks in advance

Theres next to no differences between the two engines in terms of getting them running.
What loom and ECU's are you using?
Chances are you probably have an air leak. Have you compression tested it?

hi i know what u mean bout bridging them lol i just want to get it running half right on me drive then get it set up properly moted etc.
safechav the loom i originaly did was a s2 spliced in to the mk3 xr loom it is a s2 engine so has all the s2 sensors aswell as a silver ignition ecu hearts hash diamonds or whatever it is lol, but i took the front off it and it has a little pcb with a chip on it with wires onto the ecu board so im assuming its chipped and i thought i fooked up with the wireing so i bought a complete s1 loom and fitted that the only thing diferent is the fuel pump relay and this green socket next to it did all that and still the fookin same the only things i havent changed is the ecus and the engine, its fueling well the only thing im concerned about is where the multiplugs go if ive got one the wrong way round the haynes dont explain shit bout that but apart from tracing the coulors on the wiring diagram im stumped
on the manifold sandwich plate theres two sensors one a thermo time sw.and whats the otherand im assuming the thermo one is a brown sensor directly under cold start cheers again

safechav just a question did s1s have abs and ive looked it the haynes wireing thing at the back and the colours match op to that injection module 2, if you get 5 have a look i could be wrong, but it does seem to go to coil and jetronic box strange ill whipp rocker cover off and have a look aswell cheers

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, ahhhhhhhhhh! True!
Think thats the injection module relay plug from what i remember! (ive not seen many proper s1 looms)
That IS important, without it the KE ECU will have no power supply and makes them a complete slut to start from cold.

lol that explains things then becase if i heat plugs up with a blow torch for a bit it will fire and run but a right crock of shit dont suppose u or anyone knows the part no or can i just wire it up to ignition it has two red wires a brown and a black/green are these relays hard to get hold of,have a quick look if u got 5 mins looks like a simple relay but u would know better than me cheers again finaly getting some where

right m8 been out playing and took it for a quick spin its running but the onlyway to get it started is to us a blowtorch to heat the plugs up and its still missing slightly
the relay i mentioned ford lists 2 and there both 50 odd quid if i order it and its wrong tough shit on me if i need the other do u know another way round it?
i did a comp test a couple of times heres the results
1 95
2 117
3 115
4 115
these a bit low or is it my wanky comp tester? anotherthing whats wet testing and what part does it prove fooked?
one more question as im goin on a bit when i took it down the road the turbos spooling up but no boost shows nothing on the gauge and i cant feel anything either weird soon as i get ti sorted ill get it set up properly just want it half right any ideas appreciated cheers

Can't see there being 2 relays! I'll have a look on my microcat and get you a finis code.
Compressions are ok apart from that one which is a lil bit lower, may be early signs of something about to go, but without the relay you can't diagnose whether its mis-firing or not though, they do sound like they are missing when they run in limp home mode.
As i say, when you get that really it will more than likely start and run perfect

did you do them hot or cold? Btw a wet test means squirting oil down the bores and repeating the test, if the rings are worn for example the oil helps increase compression, so you will be able to tell results.
Im looking for this relay an't find it now
gotta love microcat

Have you had the cam/rockers off at any stage?
If you have make sure the thin spacer plate is under all the rocker posts. If one is missing it wil be holding the valve open resulting in a misfire/low compression.......worth a look.

Do a hot test first, before a wet one.

Bare with me i'll have another look on microcat for the relay.
And ill have a look at the diagrams aswell to see how you can bridge it just incase but ideally you want the relay in there.

wooo hoo think ive nearly found out what was wrong i did as moonie said and on no 1 cyl the com was slightly low so i took the rocker off and the little thing that sits in the rocker was shatteres into 3 peices hence the low comp so i thought id look at the lifters out and have a look at the cam, well it well fooked on no 3 so bettween the two this has got to cause the slight missfire yea? i mean on 3 there wasnt even a lobe there hardly
so im on the look out for a std rst cam in good cond if u know anyone cheers

right i got it running and it does sound sweet and idles lovely when its warm, but startings a total slut from cold until i put a live feed into the afore mentioned relay connector and it fired up but leave the live feed in there for long it runs lumpy and cuts out eventualuly
also the fuel pump relay on a s1 loom is has a blk/yellow wire to the relay seperatly to pin 50 iirc should this be connected to anything as im runnung a s2 fuel pump relay that ive wired off the diagrams
just to refresh ya safechav
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, ahhhhhhhhhh! True!
Think thats the injection module relay plug from what i remember! (ive not seen many proper s1 looms)
That IS important, without it the KE ECU will have no power supply and makes them a complete slut to start from cold.
i still cant get one of these relays from anywhere local its doin my head in but atleast allswell mechanicly apart from no boost lol is there anyway of wireing it up any other way or do u know anybody with one
also ive wired up the s2 relay as in the haynes and it primesswitchin the ign on, but on cranking it isnt clicking ie gettin no feed from coil/ecu or whatever so i bridged it but by bridging it has it mad some thing else not work ie thermo time/cold start
i know u have your own probs at the mo. but if u get a min would u have a look please no worries if ur busy cheers matey
