I don't know what it is called in english but I usually use something like this:
http://cgi.ebay.de/Spruehextraktions...QQcmdZViewItem
It sprays water into the carpet and at the same time an integrated vacuum cleaner sucks away water and dirt.
You should be able to rent one in any DIY store.

Peter: that's what we call a Vax: wash & dry vacuum hoover.
Don't worry about losing the creases: you aren't going to be flat-packing it and putting under mass weights for a long period: it'll be fine.
The thing I would be worried about using a vax-style cleaner is if the carpet shrinks whilst drying. Ideally you could fit it still slightly damp & allow to dry out when fully fitted..but do you really want to fit a wet carpet onto the metal floor unless you can guarantee it will dry thoroughly?
Or dry brush it with a scrubbing brush and use a small amount of water/stain remover on stubborn areas. Normal carpet cleaner will work a treat (spray bottle variety) and won't wet the carpet too much.

I cleaned my carpet for my cabriolet, as i had to acquire it from a cabriolet at the scrappy which had been there a good couple of months with no roof etc, so you can imagine how mingin it was (my mates saw me while i was getting it out and were taking the piss )
Warm water, fair liquid, and a scrubbing brush.........and it was like new
I did have pictures but ive lost them all due to some cheap DVD-R's
