Default RS turbo crankshaft?

are the rs turbo crankshaft the same as all the other 1.6 CVH`s, ie same as like an XR2 or XR3i etc etc.

if i recall from the Haynes manual? there is a difference

but ive run hard boost(2 bar) through the standard xr3 cranks and never pick up shit. has anyone out there ever broken a crank?

i have seen broken cranks on other fords but this was due to hi rpm

They definitely fit as have used them before the difference is in the big end journals one has a small groove on the outer edge was told what the benefit was but can remember now

They all the same, the blocks and bearings changed though.

Only differnece is the way how the sides of the big end bearing surfaces are ground. Completely interchangeably though.

lovely, cheers. i ask as looking at my crank it could do with a re-grind, but i have already got my engine bearings which are standard size, and i have found a very very low mileage crank but its in a xr3i engine.

It bollucks, they're all the same, i built an RS bottom end using the crank out of XR3i

No, not end of story. They are interchangeable, but the bearing machining radius is different. Here's a good picture of it:

oh dam it, i was going to buy this other crank, but i dont know if to or not now. and my microcat is being a tit lately and dont work.

So any advice on shall i go for an XR3i crank in my RS turbo???

Well, like i say i built up an RS bottom end with the crank out of a EFI XR3i, all fitted, but as usual JesseT is one step ahead of the game armed with paper proof (top man), so........its up to you really.

From what he has shown us, it will work, but strength is compromised

well if i was going for standard BHP i would use the XR3i crank, but as im going for 180 to 200ish, i recon the extra strength lost is not worth the risk.

I had to check Microcat as well. It seems that S1 had the same crank as other 1.6 mk3 Escorts, radiused or not. S2 and FRST had a separate crank from any other 1.6 CVHs.

I wouldn't be worried about using a non-radiused crank. Not the first thing to break. I'm running a turboed mk5 engine as well.

well had a look at my crank last night, and its still as it came from the factory, and it doesn`t have the radius edges, it has the gooves like a standard cvh. so thats now confused me, as the engines out of a s2 as well so not sure why it dont tally up with the microcat part numbers.

anyway, think i have saved my crank now, i gave it a quick rub down with emery last night and its nice and smooth and still well in tollerance

I was fairly sure myself they were the same but JesseT seems to know his stuff and that magazine article backs it up.

Did your bottom end have the original ford shells in? And were they standard size?

yer still had the original ford shells, which are standard size. the shells are prity knackered now, thats why in re-building it. i will see if i can get the part number off them at the weekend so you can cross ref with microcat.

and the only thing with that artical, is its done by Fast Car, and not sure if i would trust them TBH. if if was Fast Ford or Performance Ford thats a different matter.

but im not questioning JesseT as he seems to know what hes on about

The shells should start something like 81SM, and have STD underneath, if they do then they're original Ford standard size shells

well they defo have STD stamped on them, as thats what i went with when ordering new bearing shells.

86MS....BAA with radiused bearings... Interesting. Not that I've never payed attention to this detail before, but this would indicate that my mk5 based engine has the better crank as well. Too bad that the crank is not well enough visible in any of my engines' build pictures. Would be interesting to know what cranks I've used.

Also would be interesting to know the difference in the efi engine's hydraulic lifters as they have their own type.

Thats what i thought, i got that crank merely to build up a bottom end to sell, hence why i said it fits end of story. Was just flicking through my photobucket and i noticed that....

Whats different about the hydraulic lifters, the heads are the same with the exception of the cut outs for the injectors......

Am I right in thinking the crank I need for my EFI block and s2 genuine ford oil pump is code 86SM 6303 ?

The cranks are pretty robust as long as they haven’t been ground to death

I had a n/a cvh that revved to 8.5k without issue so I’m sure it would be fine with some boost
