A few questions for you cosworth people
See that lots of you have escort cosworths and was wondering if these are your track+weekend only toys or do any of you actually use them as your everyday/main car?
Are you all that well off that you can afford to stash one of those lovely examples just for the weekend as well as having another fairly good motor for work and everyday activity?
After considering purchasing one instead of other common alternitives i was a bit worried about the bodywork and rust as well as engine rebuilds and needing constant parts, but then the other part of thinks that these cars are well taken car of mostly and it shouldn't be that bad. Especially an escos that has had lots spent on it, nearly all appear to have mint engines. For me it would be a main car so would that be a bad idea?
Any advice and thoughts appreaciated, thanks.

mines used everyday
though maybe about to sell or track prep it or put it through a bit of a re-furb (alloys etc)
only rust showing (its a 95 car) is a wee bit on the tailgate - think i might get a new tailgate rather than have it repaired
i havent spent much on replacement parts as it hasnt needed many - 35k miles,
havent had much tuning on the engine so maybe that makes it a bit more reliable - stage 1
i owuld have a small turbo as an every day car would be my advice

i just use my 30k big turbo lux on fine days and wkends have a passat tdi for work and shopping school run etc. mines been very reliable only ever let me down once split coolant hose on motorway coming bk from a show. it all depends how much you want from the car power wise. rust wise only the stone chips on bonnet edge on mine, but ive pumped approx 7litres of waxoyl in2 mine since ive had it, but yes ive seen a few rusty examples mainly high miles abused 1s or poorly repaired 1s, there great cars tho i look upon mine as more of an investment now if you have 1 and abuse as everyday car as long as its well maintained and looked after it should be fine and hold good money to

I have a 93 Escort Cossie, therefore big turbo, and have done quite a bit to it. Its running 330 BHP, big brakes etc. I use mine every day of the week, and then use my other car (SUV 4X4) for the weekends. I do about 110 miles a day in the Cossie, and love every mile of it. I see my Escort as a drivers car, and not an investment. There are other areas to invest money in, which give better returns. Winter is the best time, as the four wheel drive gets put to proper use on the slippery wet roads. Personally I prefer winter driving, as all the fair weather drives are off the road. Saying that, my main hobby is mechanics, and I have a large double garage kitted out with heaters, air tools etc. so all work is done by me.

I have a mk3 Golf GTI that I use as my daily hack, couldn't really care less about it to be honest,my Big turbo Escos is low miles and used only as a show car,I have in the past used it as an everyday car (when I HAD to) and I was worried about it all day, had to park it miles away from everyone in the work carpark ,saying that, nothing makes you feel better on a cold morning when you are going to work and know you have a Escos to ge there in.
dont tune it past 330 and keep it in tip top condition -which may mean cleaning it when you get home - and it will be fine

thinking of getting a mk5 van for everyday & transfering all escos stereo gear into it,
random question: do you think the doors are interchangeable between van & escos ?

As from my earlier post, I use my Cossie everyday, but Ive recently been away on business for the last 5/6 weeks, so havent been home to drive it. So gave it a nice clean today, and took it out for a spin. What a joke!!!! I didnt get it over 4000 rpm or even into 5th gear, as all the Sunday drivers were out. I dont know how you guys can drive your cars so occasionally, and actually get to enjoy the car for what it is. Roll on Monday morning, when Ill get my chance on the country roads.

Mines used everyday, do around 4,000 miles a year. Cars done 47,000 miles in all.
Ive had a bit of a problem with rust, under the rubber round the door near the front window - fixed
Drivers seal replaced, passenger seal under the rubber rusted, fixed that.
Both front arches had rusted, had em fixed last summer but the rust is back
Near the rear arch, where the bumper meets, had bubbled on both sides, had that fixed but its come back on the passenger side. Had a new rear quarter drivers side since.
Just comming through this year, behind the rear bumper its starting to get rust spots, and near the escort badge on the tailgate it has a rust spot around the "S" thats just come through
When I got it nearly 4 years ago it had no rust on it!
It sounds worse than it is i think, im just being very picky!!

they do rust mate, ive seen some right scabby examples, people have to realise that these cars are now upto 13 yrs old, none of them had very good paint on the front arch lips and these are the first to go rusty, also the sill seams, bottom of bootlid from water inside, front of bonnet and below side lights, rear arches etc, think a lot depends on how they were looked after during the first few yrs, some people think they dont rust at all!

well i spent more on my rts s1 repairing it and running it then i ever did in my cossie, cossie's are just like any other car ie. if you drive it hard you will have big bills but be sensible and they'll last and still be worth something when you come to sell it!
