Default camshaft timing problem

After refitting head and putting camshafts back , the exhaust cam will not fit to the correct place ?
When the timing marks are lined up it would touch the valve on the piston. It would need to move another 20 degrees anticlockwise to align in the middle of the timing marks
Very confused?

The no 1 piston is at TDC and inlet is correct. The timing marks on the crank are aligned. Its a small turbo engine now fitted with a T38
It has been working for 20 years

If the no 1 piston is at the top , Surely it must be right?

is it possible that you have removed the woodruff key from the cam and fitted it back in the wrong slot in the cam? aftermarket cams are often made to be used as ex or inlet and thus have 2 slots.

as a very rough guide, when the engine is at tdc firing on #1 (and both valves are closed) if you look at the engine from the front of the car, #1 exhaust lobe should be pointing about 2 o'clock and and inlet should be pointing about 10 o'clock. neither lobe should be pushing down on the follower so the valve should not be anywhere near the piston

Woodruff Key in proper place and only single slot in cam

It is as thou the cam is 180 degrees out. It has Kent cams ca28 adjustable fitted and been working for 12 years
If you turn the exhaust 10 mm anticlockwise the valve hits the piston

Your cams and not timed correctly. You look 180dg out.
