Angry Cosworth almost defeated me... Engine re-built and ready for collection... pics added

So I’ve owned the escort cosworth about a year now and its hardly seen the light of day, losing enthusiasm fast as its problem after problem

As well as doing a few essential mods of my own like wasted spark, hydraulic clutch pedal, new clutch, cams, pulleys etc I’ve found myself putting right all the f**k ups others have done. I had to chisel out the front prop bolts, repaired threads where people insist on tightening bolts as tight as humanly possible… just got it all back together and now have low oil pressure

At the moment it seems the harder I’m trying the harder the car is retaliating and I’m losing the will to live lol…

I’m planning a full re-build in a year or so, so don’t really wanna be doing a full re-build at this stage, as well as not being able to afford it as I’ve spent a packet already and need to try and get some enjoyment out of it instead of it being sat in the garage.

The oil pressure from cold goes to 60 psi (measured on mechanical gauge) then drops off to about 14-16 psi when warm. Oil picks up fine when revving but pressure far too low for my liking. I’m using titan pro s 10/50 oil.
I’m planning on buying a new high pressure pump and new shells, taking sump off and changing with the engine in the car without taking it apart. Obviously if the crank is scored or the shells show signs of being scored by debris then I’ll take it apart.

Just wondered peoples views on doing this, whether it would be ok to do that?

Sounds a good plan, but may be worth trying a 15w60 oil (Millers do a good one, I believe) if it keeps the engine going until you strip it.

If you do change the crank bearings, but want to save fitting a new pump for the complete rebuild:
- take the lid off the oil pump and linish/lap away any wear/scores from the inside of the lid
- check the oil pick-up pipe is clear of debris
- make sure there's gasket between the pick-up pipe and the oil pump

PS Don't fall out of love with the car - every time it comes on boost it'll put a smile on your face

I use 20/50 in mine,
While the oil pump is apart put a higher rated spring in it

I hope it keeps it going, just need to have a bit of fun in the car to justify all the money I have spent on it, I only ask as I like to do things properly and feels like I'm doing half a job lol

I think I'll do a compression test first to make sure rings are ok, then if they are just change bearings and pump

Thanks I know, I just go and look at the car and I'm in love let alone the coming on boost, I'm just itching, had a tune up booked which I've had to cancel guess that what I get for buying a cosworth lol, somethimes just hard to stay focused when youve spent so much time and money and things keep going wrong.

I've ordered a Protech high flow pump which will be here next week so will then get the sump off, disregard the fresh oil put in and check bearing sizes. On the plus side I found somewhere with 2 x 5L of mobile 1 15/50 so may put that in instead of the Titan Pro S 10/50

So just done a compression test, looks like engine apart

3 cylinders were around 145 psi, and the other at around 95 psi, just taxed, mot'd and insured the car too

To say I'm f**ked off would be an understatement, just weighing up my options now, didnt wanna be rebuilding an engine now as I wanna build a 500+ engine in the next couple of years.... head ache can't afford that now let alone even a standard rebuild

With my luck with this car I'm gonna have to expect the worse I guess, head re-con, new piston maybe, or 4 new ones if it needs a rebore, crank grind... better start looking for things to sell lol... oh well, keep smiling I guess

Do a leak down test a compression test is a waste of time. It may be as simple as a leaky valve.

Thanks for the reply

Just had a look in to the leak test, never done one before so didnt think of it

So should I do the test the same way as compression test, I mean warm engine??

Thanks

Yes warm engine and remove the intake pipe and listen to the exhaust and dipstick hole this will tell you where the air is going and point you to the problem.

Ok so decided to do a full engine freshen up, peace of mind then knowing everything is done properly.... especially seeing some of the other shoddy workmanship on the car. I would love to have an engine built for me but know this is well out of my reach at least for another couple of years.

I already have a Protech high flow oil pump, I also decided to future proof the engine and got some new standard pistons with valve cut outs.

I already have 6 WRC long studs so will only replace these if needed. The head has been gas flowed already so at the very least I will have this reconditioned and am thinking of getting a little porting done.

So now I have left to order full gasket set including new WRC head gasket, new bearing shells, 4 standard head bolts, double valve springs and a few other bits and bobs.

Will get everything re-lightened and balanced, crank checked, bores checked and honed.

I have looked into getting the con rods shot peened but think this is a waste of time with the power I would ever run out of that engine, cosworth rods are strong enough without getting that work done, unless anyone would disagree with that lol.

At what stage/ milage would you think its worth putting new valves in, a few places I have spoken to reface the vavles and refit them with new 3 angle seats???

So I had been waiting for my double valve springs and new valve stem seals to arrive. They came Monday so yesterday decided to take the afternoon off work and drop my head off to Neil Roper.

Should be around 4 weeks till its ready to be picked up

Top bloke, very knowledgable, happy to stand and have a chat and not rush you out of the door, cant wait to get it back

Ok so I got my head back from Neil ages ago.

It was my mums 60th and threw a surprise party for her so engine had to wait until that was paid for.

Engine was sent off to be fully re-built;

New standard piston with valve cut outs
Lightened and balanced
Head already rebuilt and ported but taken back apart and reassembled with new Turbosystems inlet and new standard exhaust all timed to Turbosystem spec.
WRC breather
Big Wing sump with Group A baffle
Standard compression ratio

Cant wait to pick it up and get it all fitted I'm giving the engine bay a freshen up first so I'm a little way off

I should of started a resto thread lol...
