Default silly problems

hiya, i'm new to my escort cos having owned it a week, lovely motor but the dash needs completly refiting!! which i don't mind as it isnt scratched, just nothing works!! so i'll be needing lots of advice i'm sure!! after taking my car out the other night i notice a horible mess behind the dials when there lite up, mainly the boast set, so ive taken them out but i can't get to where it is, to clean it out, are the gauges white standard? if not perhaps it the glue i can see holding the white paper in... how much are a new set, what are they called?

cheers
james

The dials are Electro Luminestent sheet.

So basically they glow when a electrical current is passed thru them.

Unfortunatley the sheet starts to deteriorate after many years and black "blobs" appear.

This I gather is what is happening to yours. Has your speedo, rev counter etc started doing the same?

You can easily fox the problem by replacing with new (if still availiable) or the easier option is to get a set of Briba dials.

This is a common problem, so your not alone

Hello and welcome to the site! Easily cured problem mate, scour ebay if you want standard otherwise the birba dials are very good, but if you do buy standard of ebay or anybody else be sure to buy the right main dials as Small turbo and big turbo are different.

Put some pics up of your car

this is turning to a nightmare, ive now lost all the dash lights and the rear tail lights and fog lights, sometimes i had to turn the headlights on twice for the dash lights to come on so somethings not right now its packed up all together!

Fuel gauge is up and down again
Clocks have splodges everywhere..
No windscreen spray.
aircon dont work.

Im gonna rip the whole interior out and start again!! I cant take anymore!! Do i need to take the steering wheel off to get the clocks out? if so how do i get round the airbag and cover.

So fustrating as the cost of these cars are the same a e46 m3 cab, evo 8,
I did get the car for a fair price to be honest off i nice bloke just hoped for a couple months hastle free!!lol

cheers

Have you checked the illumination brightness switch.. I lost all my dash lights and banana pod lights... Then I realised the illumination switch wasnt pushed all the way home.

I know what you mean about the lights as they are pain in the bottom.. biggest problem I had was dodgy earths on the fronts.

Dash lights and rear tail lights often are the stalk switch, but first check the dimmer control in the lower dash section.

the fuel gauge wiring is possibly as mentioned before on another thread, but check all the connections under the rear bumper and around the tank - they do suffer alot of degredation and corrosion over the years

the other electrical issues could be down to the fuse box, which is another issue which catches out several escos owners, these arnt the end of the world to change, but make sure you get the right one if you decide to change it, or you could have it repaired.

personally i think it could be a worthwhile investment in getting it to a decent recomended auto electrician.

where abouts are you from?
