big and small turbo

The later Escort Cosworth is just a refined version of the earlier one.. different turbo/head/injectors/management/etc... Early cars had a hybrid T34 turbocharger, later ones had a hybrid T28.. both produce similar power in stock form.. as above, the later cars aren't as easy to extract power from - but anything is possible!

1994 was the change over year from big to small turbo, you see a good mix of small & big turbos on an M plate, early small turbos still had the big mirrors & early badging on the tailgate.
small turbo had a fuel flap instead of a visable cap, it also had a different engine, YBP with oil squirt jets as standard & the head was meant to flow better, different exhaust, inlet manifolds, managment & turbo but most of the running gear was the same.

There where loads of differences between the BigTurbo/Small Turbo change over was mid 1994
Full filler cap to flap as mentioned above
Wing mirrors flappy to tear drop
Extra wind proofing seals on the b-pillar and bottom door frame
Rear Badging positions and type
Certain colours phased out and added ie I've never seen a Pacifica or Polais Small turbo and I've never seen a auralias Big Turbo etc
I think all Small turbos where Lux spec as well ie all had sunroofs and electrics etc
Engine wise Big turbo had the larger T34 turbo and the classic blue cam cover.
Small turbo had a Smaller T25 turbo different Exhaust manifold, different inlet manifold, throttle body, ISCV, oil kidney/flame trap, different head, cam cover, different ignition leads and coil packs, different timing belt cover, oil spray jets under the pistons, different ECU which used different sensors (crank/phrase etc), MAF sensor on the different airbox lid, recirc valve came directly off the turbo, Fuel rails where painted black for some reason on the Small turbos aswell.

Hate to say but that is a very poor example of a big turbo bay.
It has a Sierra Turbo and turbo heat shield, Sierra cam cover, Sierra cam pulley cover, Small turbo fuel rail and a sierra Alternator.. its got to be a build up doesn't even have the vins plates
This is what a Big Turbo bay looks like

Basically the T34 is a bigger laggier turbo which comes on boost later which is capable of being tuned upto 350 bhp
The T25 is a smaller less laggier turbo which comes on boost sooner but is only tunable upto about 280bhp
In standard/stage1 tuned state the T25 is better as the boost there earlier. the big turbo is better for more power thou
They are phyically different in size and the T25 has a triangular looking take off on the front housing for a recirc (no noise dumo valve)
