Default Newbie question

How do all.

Im thinking of buying an escort cosworth and one of the ones im going to look at is supposed to be a 1996 big turbo model?????

Is this possible or will it be a small turbo thats been converted, the guy seems perfectly genuine i must say, its just i dont know a huge amount about cossies yet.

The car is purple ive been told so either jewel or aubergine if that helps.

What should i look for when i go to view it??

Also how troublesome are gearboxes and diffs ive heard different storys??

Thanks
Dave

if its a st converted it's not the end of the world. the st is the best of the yb variants as it has the oil spray jets and other small differences that make is better than the older YBs.

Cheers

Thanks mate is there anyway i can find out when im looking at it??
Are there any disadvantages or short cuts that can result from the conversion??

As i said the guy seems spot on ive no problem there and he has spent alot on the car so i know it should be in good nick.

Any advice on gear boxes and diffs what kinda power will they take??
Is a 96 jewel/aubergine a rare colour or not for resale value just to give me some haggling ammo??

Thanks again
Dave

http://www.grahamgoode.com/cosworth/power.htm

The main giveaway is the rocker cover....the link above shows both...top one is Big T (BT) and bottom one is ST.

The ST is known as the YBP and you'll find this stamped arround the thermostat housing area on the front of the engine....

There are many other ways to be sure...some of which i'm not 100% certain on so dont want to mis-inform you on them...someone else will provide info i'm sure.

Cheers

The cylinder head is different too but can't remember how tbh.

Also compared to the 2wd early engines there superior in most ways..and slightly better than the 4x4 bt lump so I think my statement stands up in court your honour

P.S. that fault code I spoke to you about on the phone was a boost solenoid reading error...fuck knows whats causing that but it'd going to vauxhall tomorrow to sort it out.

Cheers

As far as im aware all Yb engines have underr piston cooling jets as standard, as it was a spray bar that ran straight from the pump. Or did the ST have jets else where machined in?

Normaly a fucked turbo with a solenoid dtc. Had many problems with a turbo oil feed banjo bolt apparrently being over tightened on production and squashing the micro filter gauze that is inside the banjo bolt....causing turbo failure.

I think the ST had a different version..think it's wrc version...I dont know 100% but I do know that the YBP has different and better oil spray jets in bottom end.

bloody hell....I did think it could be turbo related...I looked at th fault code online P1125 and it gives 4 different causes for flagging that code...could be overboosting, underboosting solenoid faulure & something else.... tbh I'm fucked off with the heap already.. it went into limp mode towing an escos from liverpool to brum and it took me ages as it wouldnt go over 50-55mph all the way back.

It's not a bad car overall and it drives really well but its drinking diesel (like 15-20mpg) at the minute and It's a mission to get to the garage every time as me and Bina both have long hours to work mon-fri...

I know for sure they're gonna drag heels over a turbo change; it only happens at about 80mph in 5th...it'll reset if ignitions left off for while but still comes back.

Cheers
Dan

Ive probably changed one solenoid and around 20 turbos on that engine design since working for vauxhall. Turbo change is a piss easy job, they should be able to have it finished before mid morning coffee break tbh.

i could be wron but im sure the st version had individual spray jets under each piston rather than the spray bar itelf that the saff 4x4 had.im suret was designed that way to stop blockages.but i may be wrong. wheres mike r when you need him?
