Motorsport Escort Cosworth
Maybe a stupid question but when you see one, how do you know if it is a factory made one and not finished by someone after it has left factory :top:
|
home made ones usually have lots of tell tale signs, retro fitted electrics, window winder holes blanked off because someone has fitted electric ones, all sorts of odd bits in engine bay, wrong cambelt covers, clips etc etc
|
were the cambelt covers different then? :? Thought it was just trim, ie no electrics, no leather, no recaros, no opening rear 1/4's etc, and first 2500 cars had water injection bag tanks. And Msport cars were all white?
|
On the other side the genuine ones should have no opening rear windows, no headrests in the rear, no armrest in the rear, no armrest in the front, manual windows and mirrors, no washer jets for headlights, no aerial.
Thats all I remember right now... :) |

msport- ie motorsport spec escort cosworths. Was the cheapest option to buy an escos with no lextras in white ;) :top: . I belive the first 2500 cars of all colours had the water injection bag tanks :top:

The confusion is that back in the day you could by a Esc Cos from your local dealer in either Lux, standard or motorsport trim. Lux being full spec with either cloth or leather, standard having a lesser spec and a Motorsport being a lesser spec in White.
In the same era you could buy a bare shell from Ford so you could build it up from scratch for racing and whilst bare do the seam welding/roll cage fitment etc A M-Sport shell would be a shell that was bought from Ford and modified by the company M-Sport adding the rollcage seam welding, turretts, the pick up points for group-a/wrc equipment and all the other things M-Sport do to there shells. M-sport built the Ford Motorsport GRP-A/WRC shells so would have had the funds and developement to do proper jobs, most where LHD but a few where RHD (like the one on ebay ;) ) and Tommy Fields present yellow monster :top: |

ford did not just sell motorsport escort cosworths as a complete car
you could buy a trimmed shell, all the ones i saw were white with a interior and closures etc just no running gear. loads of preparation teams built motorsport escort cosworths into rally cars but the best way to do it was from a bare shell. also M-sport built escort wrc cars, when malcolm wilson built group a escorts they were called Malclom Wilson Motorsport or MWM. Malcolm changed the name over when he got the ford contract from R.A.S :DD: |
