Hi all,

My EsCos has recently started making a noise which is SO annoying.
When warmed up it sometimes has a squeaking sound which is rev-dependant. the higher the revs, the faster the squeaks!
I have oiled all the alternator belt wheels, but hasn't really helped very much .... a little maybe.

WHAT can it be ? .... the alternator belt was renewed 2-3 months ago along with the timing belt.

Power steering, Air Con belts ??

Is it worse first thing in the morning when the engine has condensation on it ?

The belts need to be tensioned correctly or they'll slip.

Haven't got air-con ...

It NEVER happens when car is cold ... only when driven warm and often after it has been driven hard. But also often after a simple drive on the motorway.

Alternator belt is 100% correct mounted and tensioned.

Would a fault in the power-steering be rev-dependant ? ....

I'd of thought it must be a belt noise, if you open the bonnet when its hot can you trace it that way ?? ie try the steering when stationary to see if it makes the noise worse.

Not sure if the water pump etc would make that noise if the bearing was on the way out ??

After a run put the lights & heater on etc & see if the noise changes tone, that might narrow it down to either the belts or something the belts a running.

I have tried to pull to the side and go out and open the bonnet, but the noise is hard to trace..... think it might come from somewhere around the left vernier-pulley or alternator. But it is very hard to tell...

I've tried to spray WD40 on all the belt-wheels but apparently, it hasn't helped any ....

Camshaft bearing ? ....

check you cambelt tensioner last thing you want is that seizeing up mine had a whine a while back i traced it to that

Could be the Alternator, try putting the lights etc on & see if the noise changes tone.

If it was the cam shaft bearing I'd of thought you would see oil seeping out maybe. Is the cam belt cover off ?

Has it happened since the belts were changed ??

Good call, I had an issue with mine after the timing belt was changed.

I changed the timebelt tensioner to new when I changed the timing-belt ....

How about the alternator bearing ? ... anyone ever had any probs with it ?
I will try to put on lights and fan etc. when the noise appears next time.

hmm.... dunno.

Will check asap....

However, the noise appeared about a month ago but the cambelt+tensioner was changed way back in January...

The cambelt can be turned 90 degrees...., which should be correct, right ?

i got my timing belt changed a few months ago and once the alternator belt was put back on it squeeked like mad.sprayed a bit of wd40 down the alternater way onto the belt and its fine.it sometimes gives off the odd wee squeek but just a quick spray again and its fine.

It is hard to describe the sound, but it really is more a ticking sound than a squeaking sound. It is not like a dodgy lifter...much ligther.

A alternator belt would be "weee, weee, weee"
This sound is more like "dig, dig, dig, dig" .... very light and not very metallic like a lifter etc...

Getting fooking frustrated...

If it changes with the revs it must be something thats moving (I know stating the obvious).

U could try spraying one belt at a time with WD40 when the noise happens just to eliminate them.

These problems are a real pain in the Yaris !

i had this on mine it turned out to be the power steering pulley causing it they have a kind of anadised finish on the teeth which had chiped away and this was causing the squeaking noise i bought a new one from ford for under Ł20
may be worth taking yours off to have a look

I had spent loads tryin to solve a little
squeak i had on the front of the engine
and it turned out to be the hall effect sensor

Tried to spray everything..... no change.

Had a mate listen last night and he said, that i might be camshaft bearing but couldn't be sure. (He know cossies really well)

I haven't checked the power steering pulley casing ... it this difficult to remove ?

Hall effect sensor ? .... you wouldn't happen to have a part nr. on this ? ... or can you get it at GrahamGoodes ? ...

Might be worth changing, just to be sure... (unless it costs a million)

try a stethescope!! or a piece of tubing-it will allow a precise noise to be located very fast if you have an idea of the direction its coming from /great for searching for air leaks aswell cut pipes etc-old school stuff-lol

Haven't located the source of the noise yet, but have determined, that it comes from the cold side of the engine (injector, throttlebody side).
So ... therefore I am prone to suspect a camshaft bearing .... can't really see what else it can be....

check your crank pulley bolt is tight as i have had the same problem
