Escort Cos Exhaust Sensor - should it be there?
 

Hi all,

I have finally bought me an Escort Cossy, Imp Blue, 1996, standard apart from a stage 1 chip, -31 actuator and adjustable boost (which is coming off!), everything else is standard as far as I am aware. Anyway, the car came without the Turbo heatshield fitted so I went and bought one. Unfortunately I have problems fitting it because there is an exhaust sensor in the way. I have spoken to my very good friend Martin Holland (redrsmk5) who says that although its the same engine, the sensor on his is in a different place and the Turbo looks different too.

I wonder if anyone can shed any light on this, i.e. Is this standard or should the sensor be somewhere else? Is the Turbo standard? The car once used to belong to Cosworth Racing in Northampton, maybe they have done something to it?

Anyway, I have attached a few photos to explain more. Please help me here guys as I am a newbie to the Cossy world.

That's a Lambda sensor, it's ment to be there. It checks the Air fuel mix/ratio :D

Can't help with turbo though..

Thanks, so the car needs the Lambda sensor but should it be here or should it be somewhere else as the Turbo heat shield won't fit on because this is in the way. Martin Holland (redrsmk5) said that his is somewhere nearer the Turbo.

Also, if I changed the standard exhaust for a stainless one, is the fitting there for the sensor to screw into?

It looks to be in`much the same place as mine. Ihave an aftermarket exhaust and it fit's fine, came with the thread for it.. :)

There should be 2 clips on the right hand side of the heatsheild, they're for holding onto the wire from the lambda sensor :)

looks like yours has a bigger or diff turbo fitted, the t28 turbo that comes with the small t model has the sensor boss in the exhaust housing of the turbo, yours has obviuosly had to be fitted in the exhaust pipe as there is no hole for it in the turbo itself,any more pics of the turbo?

looks like some one has fitted a T3 from a 2wd / poss early 4X4 saff, these don't have the O2 sensor boss ( late 4X4 and ALL Escorts have them on the top of the Turbo )

some one has fitted the turbo and moved the boss the the front pipe.

what management are you running ( P8 / EEC ect / do you have a dizzy ? )

Radman:- If I was to buy an exhaust for it concidering it might have a different Turbo, which 'zorst do I buy (I am thinking of a Mongoose full system)

still on eec-4 managment with an MSD chip, i should imagine someone has bought a new turbo for the car not realising it didn't have the lambda boss in it, therefore the easiest thing was to weld it in the down pipe. They must have forgot to off the the lambda for the heatshield, hence it didn't have one because it wouldn't fit back on.
you could cut a hole in the heatshield for the lambda to pass through of if you want to change your exhaust then get someone to weld another lambda boss in the new exhaust in a better place.

That sounds a bit expensive and where abouts would the best place be for a new one to be welded into?

shouldn't be to expensive to get a boss welded in, but if you were thinking of getting an aftermarket exhaust from a specalist you should be able to get them to fit the exhaust & install the boss all at once.
you would get a good gain from an after market exhaust system, the blown out section in your downpipe is a cat, there will probably be 2 more under the car aswell, these are a big restriction for your car.

hi, the sensor is sticking out a fair amount, mines a short stubby one and no problem with the heatshields fitting- :cool:

Great help here for my mate!! I tried fitting the shield yesterday for him but it just would not locate on the brackets on the inner wing due to that lambda sensor :wall: Very weird place to put a sensor, :? Not seen one there before and all the others we looked at had heatshields on.

it does look like a t3 as dennis said,mongoose should be ok, they are a good system although you may struggle with mot as you wont have any cats fitted,although you may just scrape through with a stage 1 chip,you will also need a boss welding in it for the lambda sensor

you are still on the ford EEC 4 system ( so you wont have the dizzy ), you could fit the original turbo back or as pointed out, have a boss welded in the new exhaust ( the exhaust will transform the car !! )

but the O2 sensor dose look to long ????

Thanks for all your help. I'll keep an eye out for a sensor on eBay and see how long that is, if it's shorter i'll probably get it and fit that so that I am able to fit the Turbo heatshield. As for the aftermarket exhaust, like Guzzler says, i'll probably get the company that fits the exhaust to sort the sensor out at the same time whether they relocate it to the turbo or weld it into the new 'zorst.

HEGO sensor is most liklely an NTK and these are longer.
It is in the right place, or should say best place as up to temp quicker here they do not work at low temps, so will mix go open.
Turbo is a mix of 2 + 4wd TB03 is start of model number not T803.
Looks like 4wd turbine and 2wd compressor.
Boss is standard thread for HEGO so just buy a nut, same thread, drill a hole in exhaust and weld in, wherever you want it.

I wouldn't bother with heatshields that much before I had the fuelling checked. It's running maps for different turbo.....
