Certainly not Wilson, he was rubbish and the mechanics despised him, as he had the mechanical sympathy of an ape and they were lucky if the car ever finished a rally .

Delacour took the most famous win for Ford in 1994 (Monte Carlo - hence the limited run of Monte Escorts), and you mustn't forget Sainz - both a joy to watch behind the wheel of ANY car.

so your not fond of big malc then mike ,he gets my vote
cos he was british champion in the michelin pilot backed escort.
have seen sainz in all manner of cars, looked good in the wrc
repsol escort, saw him in 04 right behind our hirecar, couldn't
believe the king was behind us,gave me the thumbsup.
and have seen delacour in many cars too, saw the one he
won the monte in, ford still own it or they deffo did a few years ago,
had a few battle scars on it

Malcom Wilson's car always had twice the work to do than anyone elses (and that's with the same car / same team ), others could make engine / transmission last several events - good old MW's was lucky to last a stage . If Malcom Wilson couldn't break something - no-one could .

Also Delacour was a fantastic development driver as well .

you gotta hand it to big malc ,works driver then team owner
the gp a escort cosworths he built cost Ł250,000 with no spares
malc was british champion, but Patrik Snijers was
1994 European Rally Champion in a Group A BASTOS Escort Cosworth

Not necessarily the best but the most spectacular drive of an esc cos I ever saw was Colin on the 1994 McCrae Stages rally...he was doing press runs in the afternoon in the family Grp'N' car and whipped Murry Grierson's times in a grp 'a' legacy'...

All the above were good in esc's as was Armin Schwartz and Bruno Thiery...and dont forget Stig Blomquist drove the esc in a few events....

colin was a brilliant driver, saw him all over the place. murray grierson and jimmy mcrae did gravel noting for colin,
saw them together on many rallys.
mcrae junior drove a big malc escort
colin won the 95 wrc and alistair the 95 brc

Frank Meagher was my favourite. A real legend here in Eire. Pity we'll never see him drive again. He nearly went bankrupt a few times over rallying, And it eventually killed him.
The escort was the ultimate rally car. Escort cossies are getting rarer on the stages these days.

he had some amazing rs's from mk2 rs1800 to ex works wrc escort
his last rally car was a wrc focus.
sadly Frank's gone but not forgotten...

It's great to hear Franks name again. one of the greats, always on a tight budget. also over here was Eamon Boland. back some years he drove R14 FMC. it was the loudest anti-lag popping car i ever heard. absolutely incredible. you would shit yourself when it passed.... even when expecting the bang. some great names mentioned above!!!

GREAT POST!!!!!!

Frank was sound, Always had time for a chat. Even more so if you were a Ford nut. Used to call into him every now and again in fethard. Bolands escort was a mental yoke alright. Have pics of it somewhere, black with a big yellow "1" on the back of it. Looking forward to the round of the WRC in Ireland next year. The place will be jammers.

LOL Fairplay cozzfather you have them all lad. The last i saw Stephen Finlay was in Killarney a few years back. He had a Focus WRC. One of the first in Eire at the time. (Joe)? McGurk had Bolands black WRC after him. Don't know where it is now. Boland always had loadsa dosh, if he had as much skill he'd be a legend too. An Irish rally driver was caught with his pants down recently (literaly), His wifes family was his main sponser and they pulled the plug on him.

just on the subject of ford rally cars, this day 21 years ago Ari Vatanen crashed in argentia in a ford. He nearly died twice as a result of that accident. his worst ever accident. hard to believe its that long ago.
