Need help with NTL cable modem and multiple Laptop/pc's
Please help
Why when i switch my desktop on (win 2K) the internet is there and i can use it straight away.
But when i unplug the ethernet cable from my pc to plug it in the laptop (the one connected to ntl modem) why does it not have internet?
Is it something to do with MAC addresses? Operating system compatibility?
Anyone able to help?

yes its mac address.
ntl uses mac levl security, so if you plug it into a differnt device it doesnt recognise it.
plut it into your laptop, reset your set top box/modem (pull the plug out n put it back in) and then reboot the laptop
now when you try n get on the net youll get an NTL registration page

I tried that already
But the laptop aint having none of it.
I'm connecting with the thernet cable, not usb. But internet explorer is being a twat and not showing pages or detecting settings.
The laptop acknowledges a Local Area network Connection when the NTl modem is plugged into it, but i can't seem to get internet through

Ok, on the laptop (win XP) when the NTL modem is plugged into it via ethernet cable, it acknowledges a network connection with the modem....but under the support tab it says (INVALID IP ADDRESS)
Any help?
cheers

you cannot do it
the connection is locked to MAC address you will need to ring your supplier and get them to change it or buy a router give them the mac of the router and plug all your pcs into that

lol
Its ok, its all under control now
There's a bloody disc that comes with the NTL modem, and there is some sort of registry entry on it that gets installed so the laptop recognises that internet is being piped down the ethernet cable.
Silly me eh
Cheers guys

no it wont ranj, itll be because he didnt reset the STB properly and its still trying to get a public IP address and NTL is refusing it. if the STB is reset with an unrecognised device plugged in it'll give it connection to the internal 10.x.x.x network on NTL and any webpage he tries to access will point at will redirect to their registraion server

BTW, cable modems round here are not locked to MAC at all, they used to be eons ago, but now its a free for all!
I do find it wont automatically lease another DHCP address though, and I do have to restart the modem.

stu, he wont be able to ping anything without an IP address actually, thats why windows assigns a made up 169.xxxxxxx when its unable to get one, as without it applications which use TCP/IP to communicate locally in a client/server type configuration wouldnt work
i just (to double check lol) turned off wireless and I havent got any ethernet patched in, thus both adapters state "media disconnected"
it is still possible to ping the NIC via 127.0.0.1
know what ur saying re: 169.254.xxx.xxx tho

i think rank has forgoten that you need a source adress to form a TCP packet
else what is an icmp request replying to?
stu, thats because there's a virtual adapter windows created thats actually refered to as loopback (you cant see it, but its there) and windows routes all local adresses via this adapter, even with no physical network card installed in a PC as long as tcp/ip is enabled you will get a 127.0.0.1 created.
loopback isnt a hard coded thing same as 10.x and 192.168.x etc. arent hard coded as private IP adresses, its up to software vendors (ie microsoft) to confrm to the IP standard when writing their software etc.
pinging 127.0.0.1 will never tell you anything usefull

stu, no you dont as the nic can be down and it will still reply
the IP address is bound to a seperate VIRTUAL adapter and the routing table binds all 127.x subnets via this adapter. the nic can be completely ducked (or missing) and you'll still get a rping response.
it would tell you if the TCPIP stack is missing tho, but ive never seen that happen since the days well before windows 3.1!

A router is honestly your best bet if you want to use the connection for several PC's/laptops - saves continually rebooting the modem which doesnt do em much good!

Cool, cheers guys!
Will be getting a router
See other thread about wireless shinadigans today
arked up outside a freight firm, trawled through the files and found a memo entitled 'all drivers' and the fool left it open for me to tamper with files!
So i changed the memo to say that they are having pay cuts and printed it out 50 times with the network printer

dog you just contradicted yourself.
also NTL does not automatically work without going through a longwinded registration process on the new MAC. I know this to be true for the set top boxes for sure (as i have to do it reguarly on mine) ive never tried on the modems but ive been told by other people that it works identically to the STB

Not entirely sure about the NTL STB's you have more experience of them than me - Telewest stbs and cable modems just recognise new equipment on a reboot - no need to reregister and I am 99% certain that NTL's cable modems are the same - they certainly used to be!
