Default Fan override help please peeps . . . .

Ran a pair of wires from the thermostat into a switch in the car as a fan override. It worked but i thought the fan was running slow. I disconnected the wires and turned it back to how it was but still seems to be running slow. When the engine starts to get a bit hot the fan kicks in but only stops it from getting hotter and does'nt bring the temp down as i'm sure it should. The fan does spin when you spin it manually but stops very soon. Should it spin freely or should it have some resistance ? Could it be the fan tightening with age or is it something i done when trying to override it ? Any help mucho appreciated.

is it just a switch to control it when u like or permanately? either way why would u want to do this it will just tire out your fan can result in your fan motor getting fooked or your fuse box relays burning out, leave things the way they were

Just to bring it on when stuck in traffic and temp starts to rise instead of waitin for thermostat which can become unreliable with age. Just for piece of mind.

Not too sure to be honest mate, but it is a good idea. I had it done on my S2 and it's in the S1..like you say: just for piece of mind.

sufsRS, I think he means on a switch. If it was on perm, then it would take ages for the car to warm up, and there would be no need for the fan to run when the car is travelling, so a waste of time. I don't think that it would increase the tiring out of the fan by a great deal neither (unless it was perm on) as all it is doing is switching it on slightly earlier than it *may* already cut in at. More of a safe guard so that you can decide when you want the fan on. As said by Dry, the therms can become unreliable with age, so why risk it. I think it's a good, easy, cheap & worthwhile mod.

That about sums it up Shawn. Do you know if the fan should spin freely or spin for a second or two then stop when you spin it by hand. Mine stops the temp from rising but does'nt bring it down. It should bring it down should'nt it ? I think it is running a bit slow but have'nt got another to compare it to. Do they start to seize a bit with time and can it be sorted by lubricating the bearing or something ? How is yours wired on the S1 mate ?

Sorry mate, meant to reply on weds, but forgot

Went out to the car & checked it for you. If you try to hand-spin the fan, it only moves a few 'blades' worth & is quite stiff. When the fans is switched on, then off, it continues to spin for around 2 seconds before stopping.

I don't think that you can lube then up as I'm sure they are a sealed unit: but could be wrong: I've never taken one apart, so you might be able to.

As for wiring: next to the therm housing there is a plug. This is the original fan switch wiring. You need to break into this & add two wires then run them into the dash area & fit your switch. In the S2 I used a simple toggle switch, but the S1 already had one fitted. See pic: switch next to the foglight one. Not sure what the switch is off the, as it has a fan pic on it.

its not the safest way to just run a switch direct from the thermostat
use a relay on it,then you can have decent power getting to the fan as well

Did that with the 2 wires. When they come off the stat they run behind the headlight on the passenger side so joined into them there. Tried it and thought the fan was a bit slow so removed them and the fan ran the same. Never really heard the fan running before that since i bought the car so it may have been running at this speed all along and it may be fine but it should bring the temp down and not just stop it from rising should'nt it ?

Should bring it down, yeh..depends how hard you've been running the car tho and if you are still driving at lower speeds will bring it down a lot quicker than stood idling. (Slower reduction as it is still getting hot in there even tho the fan is blowing on it)

Yeah never thought of that mate. DOH ! Just left it running then switched on just before the stat would bring it on and watched the temp gauge and it stopped it from rising and that was it but like you say it was stood still so it probably would bring it down if travelling, even at a slow speed.

if the fan isnt spinning freely when you do it manually then your bearing is buggerd if you want it on permanantly then bridge the wires to the fan not to the switch hope this has helped.lisa n.x

Should the fan bring the temp down when the car is stationary ? Don't wanna run the fan permanently, just wanna bring it on before the stat would normally bring it on and also as a precaution if the stat fails.

I had switch in car, was great! Used to just switch it when approaching traffic, never got to hot at all then! Rather than sitting in traffic with your eyes glaring at the guage making sure the fan is going to cut in!!!

got one on mine too, you dont need to run 2 wires from the fan switch, just the 1 will do, run it to an overide switch that switches to any decent ground point behind dash and provided your connected to the right side of fan switch the overide will controll your fan. if you then also run the switched ground to a flashing l.e.d with a fused ign + you will know when your fan is on wether you've overridden it or not
