Hi ya guys,

Was driving home on the moterway after work last night, noticed the brakes feeling a bit spongy (had to pump to get pressure) and then started to get a knocking noise when on lock from the front wheels. Popped off at the bro's on the way home (cheers for diagnosis and dinner bro ) and found that the main nut that holds the hub on had worked loose and was actually holding on by a single thread!!!

Got a mate to pop round and tighten her up, so all sorted now - but apparently this is quite common on s2's So just wanted to warn people... if you get these symptoms, don't wait on it as I was pretty close to loosing my wheel and wouldnt want this to happen to anyone else.

 

Glad you got it sorted before anything major happened to you or the car mate, looks a nice car from your sig so would be shame for anything like that to happen to it!

 

did you remember to tap in the locking part of the nut? if not will eventually work loose again

 

we had a simalar thread a few days ago.

 

same happend to me in my old cabrio, did it about 3 times till i realised you have to bang a dent in the nut!

 

Yeh, I made sure to give it a nice few hard wacks with a pin to get it bent in... It appear that this was done the first time as you could clearly see where it had bent back out..

Gonna check out the other wheel 2n just to make sure she's nice and tight too... Not sure if its the same on the rears... anyone advise ?

 

I've never haad this on my S2 but my bro has had it twice now on his FRST

 

I had the same thing happen to me last year! Started knocking when on full left lock so took it into my local garage with the instructions "offside front wheel bearing sounds nackered"

Pick the car up later, sounds fine until I tried pulling into my garage and it was like i had left the handbrake on. Took the wheel off and discovered that it was only held on between the caliper and the main hub.... the nut fell off in my hand when i took the wheel off. When i went back to the monkey mechanics the next day, they had replaced the nearside front wheel bearing

 

Can a shagged wheel bearing cause severe vibration under braking?

 

yes also with the wheel bolts aitn done up or there pulling through thw wheel due to wrong wheel bolts ( from experience )

 

I had something similar... but needless to say it was even more mental

I did my first test at brunters in the RST with the wheel banging off the caliper because it was flexing that much! It didn't stop me and I kept the foot in and recorded 149.9.

It was literally held on by 2 threads and there I was moments before trying to set acceleration and top speed times coming round the brunters bend FLAT

Could have been SOOO bad

Lesson learned!

Seen a few wheel bearings that have been propper shagged and people driving mega distance on them in that state but have set to hear of a nut comming loose/falling off altogether!
