Default Clutch in a 2004 Ka how diffecult.

Hi guys...changed the clutch on my 1.6 2001 Astra was a lot of work compared to a rear wheel drive type car I am more used to....took me 2 days...just dropped the box back a bit...was a PITA to be honest.

But my son in laws 2004 Ka now needs a clutch...slipping badly,

How much of a job is it on this car....and any idea what a smaller garage would charge....if its not to bad a job I may consider doing it for him...just not as keen since I retired.

Thank you so much for that...the web site instructions dont sound to bad....it was a swine of a job doing the Astra...I'm now 66 and not as keen as I was but paying to have it done will stretch them.

I may have a go myself after reading that...could do without it though.

In those instructions it doesn't mention removing the drive shaft from the gearbox...is that right...it can stay in place?

When I have done them I have removed the shafts and completely removed the box from the car, as you say, it seems they''ve just moved the box into the wheel arch with the shafts and gear change still connected.

Know what you mean about not being as keen.....

I got the box off the engine and the old plate off...I was suppised seeing how badly the clutch was slipping that it was not rubbing on the clutch rivits...very very near but not touching....anybody had this with a slipping clutch.

Well it was a bugger of a job with the car on stands....the instruction dont say remove the drive shafts...and I did get the clutch out...but I do wonder if leaving the shafts on made it a harder job...love to hear your views.

Just got to order the parts now...I see on ebay I can get a 3 part kit in the hdy release bearing for as little as Ł60 but has no brand name...with branded kit at around Ł100.

Which one should I go for guys?...anybody heard of TECKMARX clutches???

Although it is likely to be a clutch related problem there have been instances of the incorrect grade /inferior quality gearbox oil being used from the factory.

A well known manufacturer had an issue with this a few years back when many of their supermini's were suffering the same symptoms as yours. The factory recommended fix for this was replacement of the gearbox oil, it worked!

New oil is cheaper than a new clutch or box and could be a cost effective first port of call, at the very least draining the gearbox oil will enable the mechanic to look for metal particles in the oil - indicating gearbox wear.

It did turn out to be the clutch...I completed the job last Saturday....with a new genuine Ford Part Clutch in it now its as smooth as silk.

In the end it wasn't to bad...still a pain...rather work on old school rear wheel drive cars...so much easier.
