Unhappy tdci loss of power

Hi there,

Can anyone help me!!!!! I have a 07 mk2 Focus 1.8 TDCI, once everyday for the past 3 days iv had the same problem, when I go to pull away I lose nearly all engine power & the revs increase very slowly with my foot right down on the throttle but idles fine, it's like it's gone into limp mode however no engine management light comes on, when I turn the engine off & on again it's back to normal till it happens again. got a feeling it could be literally anything, any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks in advance Mike

Hi James

would a fault code be saved on the ECU as the engine management light hasn't come on? I know a good diesel specialist garage but that's my last resort, will try my local garage & ask if they can run a diagnostic test, see if anything pops up.

Cheers Mike

Has it had the fuel filter changed? I know with these engines if the fuel filter is oil it can cause all sorts of problems,I've had then in the past where the car/van is trying to pull when putting your foot down and the vehicle is surging forward.

Hi all

I did a engine service back in July, changed oil/oil filter, air filter & fuel filter. Update on the problem!!! I lost power 4 times in the 7 mile journey to work this morning but on the last one the Engine Management Light came on. I thought that's a good thing! took it to my local garage in my lunch brake & left it with him. This is what he found,

Fault Codes
P0704 Clutch Switch Input Circuit Malfunction (not a clue what this does?)
P0380 Glow Plug Control Circuit
P0489 Exhaust Recirculation Control Circuit Low

However I had unplugged the EGR valve a while ago & drove it round with the Engine Management Light on then plugged it back in & the light went back out. he's wiped the memory clean so if the light comes on again hopefully it will show the main problem...... will keep you posted.

Mike.

Get the glo plugs tested, they don't just work on start up on those cars and are there for warm up efficiency.

If the glo plugs are shot it can give a limp mode, usually though you get a message on the dash 'engine malfunction' or similar.

Hi all

Ordered a new Clutch Switch & Glow Plugs, should be here Saturday. Thanks for the link GVK! seams a few people have had this problem with the 1.8 tdci, also I put a multi-meter where the glow plugs are attached to the red connecting wire which joins them all up & got 12 volts till the glow light on the dash went out then around 8 volts then started the engine and had a good 14 volts, not sure if this is good or bad? unfortunately the multi-meter would only read up to 10amps so couldn't measure the amps.

It shows that your glo plug relay and associated wiring are working but the glo plugs themselves could still be shot .

I just hope it's not a faulty fuel pump.

Update everybody

Fitted a new Clutch Switch and Glow Plugs, unfortunately no difference at all, after driving around for a hour Saturday (losing power a lot) the Engine Management came on again however as I was driving it to the garage Monday the light went out, the mechanic said the fault wouldn't be saved if the light has gone out, I watched a video on you tube of a guy testing the EGR valve were he took the motor off and opened and closed the valve with long nose pliers, so I did this to mine and the valve moved smooth and freely, stated the car with motor off and valve open which made the same problem I am getting, locked the valve closed and the engine revved up as normal, I noticed the half moon arm on the inside of the motor housing moving up and down all by its self so I think the motor is to blame, put it back together with the motor disconnected problem solved engine runs fine, new motor is on its way!

So is it the age valve motor then. Are these the ones with the 2 wheels on and they roll up a twisty guide to open and close the valve.
