Default oil change...

diesel turbo car specs synthetic 5-40 but has 140000 miles on it. would you stick with 5-40 or go for a thicker grade 10-40 or 15-40 because of the high mileage?

Personally I would stick with the specified oil, I would change it a more frequently though.

5w-40 will only be thinner at cold engine temps, so wouldn't affect operating temps; So really a 15w40 will only be thicker in cold temps on startup - which isn't really ideal or going to help you.
It's only the "warm" temp (the 40) thickness which will be thicker at operating temp; so the only place to go would be 5w-50/60, which is a bit pricey as you will never get any benefit from running that high of a grade oil.

I would say stick too what the manufacturer specs.

I always use specified oil. Someone far more intelligent than me worked it out.

Just use what is spec'd and change often if you're keeping it etc.

140k is not high miles these days. ( well for a decent engine that's been looked after lol )

bought it today. went for the manufacturers recommended grade. 8 and a half litres required was a bit of a kick in the balls but ECP has a 35% off week on just now so that took a bit of the sting out of it

How much? Can't have been too bad with 35% off?

Ł83 for the mobil1 oil after the Ł44 discount. my previous cars have only ever needed a single 5 litre bottle.

That will quiet the engine down a bit.

I bought the 350mm Brembo front discs from ECP at the end of last year and managed to warp one within 3 months.

changed both the air filters yesterday, they looked like they had a wasps nest in them, must have been about 50% blocked so the car feels that little bit sharper now ! maybe gain another tenth of a second on the 1/4 mile
