Default Who has fixed the C1288 ABS/ESP fault

Hello there,

So i have the ESP light permanently on and the error code C1288 read with a code reader. I am well away of how common this problem is and how much the dealership try to charge.

I would like to know which route to go down in terms of risk / likely outcome / potensial problems.

A, remove the ABS pump module and send to ECU testing for repair, around £200 and between 2-5 days turn around

B, purchase the ABS modulator unit which is around £180 and just swap them over.

I cant decide which would be less risky and would like a few opinions if possible.

ok i have this problem = i have already tried BBA reman and ecu testing in derbyshire...both replied with "we do not have the rig to test this"

my pump is 98ag

looking on ebay this is not a popular pump - your pump might be more readily available

so i tried 4.2 motors in tottenham (22 years mechanic for my cousin) they took time and effort to ask me about any repairs that had been done and they actually put car on ramp and went into sensor reading menus on the diagnostic while spinnig each wheel to get a reading - low and behold abs sensor 1 input circuit etc aswell as abs/tcs error -

the prognosis was that either the abs ring is broken or bearing is fitted wrong way round (my original guess) thus causing the relay in the abs pump to break circuit or whatever it isnt doing properly. either that or pump is fooked...

my point is let a garage diagnose it properly...someone trusted that will make effort....

dont throw money at a pump yet...

Solution B will need more than just swapping.

I'll bet it will need configuring to the car with diagnostics, not just a hand held scanner.

Apparently no need for recoding if you only replace the modulator and not the whole unit. The modulator can be seen here.
I feel like I have answered my own question buy the difficulty is when you attempt to separate the modulator from the ecu you could easily damage the ecu which would be very pricey to fix. I have read 2 post s of people doing this successfully but haven't read any of people using the ecu place.
Hence my question about risk / success rate.

Thanks for that.
One last question. I am now wondering the best way to bleed the brakes after replacing the modulator.
I've read that disconnecting the battery 24 hrs before helps to dissipate the pressure In the system but how can I ensure I bleed air out of the modulator. I haven't got a pressurised bleeder either.

Ive changed loads and loads of pumps and modules on tranny connects before. The bushes in the pumps wear out and the motor stops working.
