I tried all sorts, rice and vinegar was recommended, worked ok until the rice soaked up the vinegar and left a horrible sticky mess which was impossible to get out
Bleach and gravel worked ok IIRC.

Bleach can make the plastic go brittle so be careful! A good soak in biological washing powder and boiling water then agitate with beads etc.

Plenty of soaking in hot water can be good but best thing i've found is car wash shampoo mixed with hot water and a handful of sand. block the openings and shake it around and leave to sit for a while and repeat.

another thing i found good was fill it halfway with hot water and then pour in a load of grease removing grit soap (like swarfega or something along those lines) then shake and leave to soak and repeat
