Default K&N, De-Cat, Re-map....Worth it on a Derv?

My runabout is an 05 Mondeo TDCI 115.

I looked under performance parts on Ebay and seen K&N do a panel filter for my car and also De-cat pipes are on there.......Would having these 2 alone make a difference to performance or not really being a diesel?

Also.....My Mondeo has 135k on her. Full service history. With this amount of miles would a Re-map be ok, not going to blow a Turbo up or break any other engine part would it?

Yup it will be well worth it... I'm pretty sure airtec do a intercooler kit for the Mondeo tdci.. I wish I'd tried one on mine now.

Remap and de-cat, wouldn't bother with K&N, drill cold side of airbox

Thanks for fast replies

So good power can be achieved from these TDCI's.....I am very happy now!

So dont get a K&N.....They claim on their ad' that they increase airflow by 30%, dont know how true this is? So drilling a few holes on the cold side of the air box will increase power a bit? I did this to my Astra GTE & Golf VR6 back in the day, induction noise was great!

So.... A De-cat and Re-map it is!! I have seen these really big intercoolers on Ebay, would it make a difference on a 115 TDCI with a Re-map and De-cat? My knowledge on Turbo'd cars is somewhat poor

Surely drilling holes in a air box will just draw warm air into the engine.

Just read on Google about K&N panel filters......Not very promising reviews!

Also.....One review of De-catting a diesel is saying it is very bad as the Turbo needs the Cat for back pressure?

Re-map is def' on the cars though and for only £300 they say they can take a 115 TDCI to 145 with a shed load more torque! This is great....But!! TDCI's are known to have a weak spot with the dual mass flywheel which is an expensive fix but reading up on this someone said a solid flywheel from a Ford Transit is a straight fit.....Dont know how true this is or if any modifications will need to be done?!?!

That's why you only do the cold side.

Why bother with a de-cat pipe on a diesel? Just take of the front flexi pipe and smash the guts out of the cat - simples. Done both mine now and lots of others I know. Sounds a bit pikeyish but its not gonna fail emisions like a petrol motor and saves you the money towards your remap.

decats on a mondeo have been worth between 15 and 25 brake on their own with no other mods from a rolling road event i went to a few years ago

get the pipe done first

then get the remap

Thats an interesting one.......Take the front flexi bit off then smash the internals out of the cat.......Is it easy to get the flexi off as my mechanical skills are not the best.....Although I did take the EGR and inlet manifold off yesterday and gave them a good clean, was well happy with myself!! So a de-cat on a TDCI will release lots more horses.....Excellent! What about this thing on Google I read about the Turbo needing the Cat for back pressure or was that bloke talking out his a$$?

Don't worry about back pressure - pub talk. On your car don't worry. It can be an issue but not for you.

Front flexi pipe it x 2 nuts / bolts and same the other end. Might get away with just dropping off the cat but for the sake of another 2 fixings then whip the whole thing off.

done the de-cat and more importantly the particulate filter and ecu decode on my 2.2 c5 hdi think there 136bhp or something standard, runs so smooth now with massive torque can be doing under 2000rpm up hills in 3rd and 4th, cud go for the 180 remap , on the 2.2 easily doable loads of people allready running them at that!! turbo spins up so smooth on the vv absolutly just about no lag at all..

Would de-catting her make the exhaust sound louder as she is loud enough being a diesel on idle?

Where and what is the particulate filter mate......Please excuse my terrible mechanic knowledge!!

dont smash the internals out of the cat as they scrap for good money, more than enough to pay for a de cat

Fiar point - my way was just the converse - job done in 10 minutes and saves the decat cost and hanging about.

Horses for courses - you are not wrong

Turbo derv's respond VERY well to a remap! Ask Stu! Especially regards to usable torque! and torque = acceleration!

Fit a decat (as has been mentioned sell the cat, you'd be mental to smash it up, it will more than pay for a decat). Consider a larger intercooler (not vital, but you'll notice the difference on a hot day) You can fit a panel filter, but the engine's not particularly strangled when it comes to the air intake, so it's not massively beneficial.

You don't have a particulate filter (DPF) so forget about that, and it's very worthwhile replacing the fuel filter (with a Ford one, not cheapy) before you do any work on the car.

Once you've done all that, get a good remap and you'll have a much quicker car!

Oh, and when your EGR-Intercooler hose splits (which it will) PM me as I sell silicone ones! )

Defo decat. Its my next mod on my st tdci. Just added a Cobra exhaust to my standard car and that made a nice difference, much more responsive! Decat is next when funds allow, the turbo will spool up a lot faster. People have had good results from universal intercoolers off ebay for under £100 notes!
With that mileage the car will benefit from cleaning the inlet manifold out and replacing all the seals. Run a can of BG244 through it to clear out the fuel system, STOC members swear by the stuff, and also consider adding some Wilkinsons 2 stroke oil to your tank to help lubricate the pumps etc. This will also quieten the engine down, make it run smoother and increase mpg.
