The last tow truck i was in had over 700000miles on it.

 

Well thats obvious as 2 times 500,000 makes a million

 

the truck i drive in america is coming upto 800,000 miles and its only a 2005, and i put 13,000 more miles on it every month

 

Tbh a German engineered land rover was always gonna be a pretty good bet for reliability.
Two cars I broke down the most in we're my fiat UNO turbo and my first series one.
Never broke down in the second series one or any cossie,xr2i failed a few times and my mk1 gti engine blew but it still got me 10 miles knocking its tits off!!!
Modern car reliability should be pretty good as long as you service them well,I'd say most things 1998-2005 should be relatively bombproof if well cared for,older and your seeing sensor issues,rot etc newer things get a bit too complex and beyond the level of the home mechanic.
I'd say my Nissan vanette is pretty damn reliable,I've heard of them doing huge mileages with no issues mainly cos their so basic,there's not a lot to break!!!

 

And also I think the mercs been through tougher terrain than the motorway etc.
Ive seen a few vids of old merc diesels with a million km's on them all original running gear etc.
Wasnt a mk2 cavalier the first British built car to do a million miles?i know the black cabs cover stupid mileages but this was a car.
Could be a slight myth but I think the guys pretty straight when he told me that back in the 80's "rank films" had a fleet of fiesta 1.6 diesels that ran 24/7 from london to Bristol,up to Manchester,across to newcastle and back to London again delivering the latest films to different cinemas etc.
He claimed they were hitting 500000 miles after 3 years when they went to auction but due to the 5 digit speedo nobody was that aware of the mileage apart from the seat/steering wheel/carpet etc and often the traders would just replace these items and sell the cars as "first time round" mileage.
Impressive if true.

What do you class as a serious breakdown?

 

Exactly. Or what do they even class as a simple breakdown ?

Ive 210k on my van, and never had a breakdown light or serious.. ( and now me saying that it will die tomorrow lol )

 

I actually think alot of modern cars are actually less reliable, especially in the case of modern dervs compared to older generations!

With older cars if something goes wrong it's simple to sort out at the roadside, we have a Sierra that we have had from new virtually, done about 150K now and it's been 100% reliable, I really don't think you could say that about modern cars.

My Cosworth has done 113K, and too has never let me down.

As you say as long as you have a decent car to start with and maintain it, it should look after you accordingly.
