Default What shall i buy..... 17k/18k

Looks like I may have a potential buyer lined up for the merc so on the hunt for a new car soon. Had my mind set on a Range rover sport (baby tdv6 one) to get me through the winter as i'd like a maserati grandturismo next year but in two minds after hearing the depreciation etc.....

Basically I will have around 17/18k to spend on something, doesnt really matter how bad it is on juice, it just needs to be reliable, want something fairly big so no 2 seaters or convertibles, not really feeling any porkers, wasnt overly impressed driving an RS4, M5 is a possibility but most of my driving will be short runs and heard they are shit for this!! Kind of running out of ideas tbh!! WIll only be keeping it until early next summer so would like something that shouldnt depreciate too much over this time.

Any inspiration?!

Generally, if I have trouble thinking of a car I'd like more or does a better job than the one I've got, then I keep it until I do!

Same here mate!

Well I'm not into the whole RR/4x4 thing, its done to death up here.....
But if thats your bag so be it, I'd opt for some sort of M car or or big cruising saloon with loads of grunt.

See what you mean but the merc is due a serivce, 4 new tyres etc etc in the next 6 months so would rather just out now to save the cost, fedup of chucking money at it!!!! PLus had it 15 months whcih is already a record for me!!

Been looking at those CLS55's this mroning they look good value for money, might reconsider RS4's again, I may have driven a donkey!!

Your still buying potential expense with a 'new car'.
The difference is you know exactly what your merc needs having done...

Having owned a few Audis, they are good cars but pricet for parts for the S and RS series cars.
Newer shape M5s are a beast and are the one I would pick personally. But theya rent cheap on stuff either..

I have a E60 M5 now and its a great car.
Fits 5 people goes like stink and its fine for short and long journeys, i absolutely love the gearbox , you just need to remember to treat the box like a manual which doubles as a auto if needed.
There is not one thing i dislike about it.

Jaguar XF 4.2l supercharged v8 you will get one in that range.
Or even the 3.0l V6 diesel.

Far cooler than a bmw

Having had all sorts of new cars over the years including jaguar xf and Audi a7 rid Quattro I can help looking at cars that are used every day as nothing but an expense and a needless expense at that

For some 8 months now I've gone way back the years with 4 to 6 grand cars that I drive till the tax is up and sell on and keep doing this

In the past 2 months I've bought and sold 5 cars and made 7 grand profit and had free motoring and tax and tests etc

Am I just an old miserable bastard now or does anyone else share my " mean bastard" view of new cars

To answer your question it would have to be diesel and mapped so perhaps an Audi of some guise

Thanks for all the replies chaps just come back on here! In answer to some of the questions....

Mk2 Focus rs - no thanks driven a friends one manier a time and didnt like it one bit, went quite well but forever changing gear, steering over the place, not for me....

E90 - just sold my 325 m sport coupe m3 although a million times better it would still feel like the same car, plus they still havent dropped in price enough yet!

Q7 - heard they are like driving an A4 on stilts and thats about it? I dont know never driven one!

RS4 - a friend bought one as a part ex (he's a car dealer), tbh I didnt think it was much different to the S4 I had, admittedly lovely seats, look lovely etc but it didnt really feel rewarding to drive. I was stupidly hungover so may try another one and see as I 'want' to like them!!

Chris how do you find the M5 (in particular the gearbox) on short runs/traffic etc, heard bad things about them? Is it really 'that' bad?!! Also do you know how they compare with a 535d m sport?!

Cheers
Chris

The m5 e60 is an epic car but the gearbox is horrendus driving slow and fuel economy for the bhp is equally bad. Its a great car but if honest all "M" cars are not for me.

Audi RS6 is better but to be honest Chris you are like me, nothing will fully be good enuff!!

Get in to jetskis 300bhp on a rough sea, thats where its at!!!!!

What about something like this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-6-SERI...5#ht_936wt_934

Or this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-635-3-...#ht_1059wt_984

Haven't got a clue what either of them are like but they are in your price range and quite stylish.
