I would guess eBay etc has a lot to do with it but also as the cars are getting older, getting decent quality spares must be getting even harder to find without paying a high premium, therefore less mark up.
Unless it's a barn find I'd guess there's only really enthusiasts owning these cars now so they would know the value better.
I've got a garage full of Rs bits but they won't be sold on here as I believe a certain trader took umbridge to someone resurrecting a thread from 3 years previous and accused me of being a trader.
Despite numerous posts proving otherwise it seems certain people on here have more influence than we think.

Indeed, I always mention Matt at rsspares.com where I can as he isn't very well known on here but has an awesome stock and can get lots of new parts as well.
Great guy and has come up trumps everytime I've needed something

There are a lot more now than there once was but the money to be made has almost vanished

Many reasons why

1, A lack of cars left to buy

Most i go and see are just total scrap and there is hardly anything on them worth selling

2, Lack of customers

There are less and less cossies / RS cars on the road now so less of a demand for the parts

3, Ebay

Need i say anything

4, Prices of cars to buy

I am now paying more for cars than i was 3/4 years ago and parts are worth much less

5, Type of customer

sadly when i started it was 90% decent easy to deal with people 10% complete time waisting wankers
Now 10% decent folk and 90% idiots who expect brand new parts from 20 year old cars but want the parts at ebay junk prices

6, The financial state of the country

Like any other business its hard going

7, The amount of ebay / internet part time traders ( these have grow over the years )

This obviously has a big impact on legit traders as these fellas pay nothing in overheads and nothing to the taxman so can undercut us no probs

There are many other reasons but there the main

Times sure have changed in the 10 years i have been around

some good some bad , but for the lrgit trader who does it for a living , sadly more bad than good

Good job i have other fingers in other pies , lol

So true

Also people with the big spec cars tend to break their own cars these days
