Default Breaking motors - is it worth it?

I see a lot of cars being broken for spares both on here and on the usual websites like Ebay and Gumtree. Obviously a lot of people are doing it these days but is it really worth it?

I can see the point in buying a motor on the cheap and then selling the parts on for a profit but there's people who will buy a car, spend a small fortune on it and then break it? It makes sense if you're having trouble selling it, and I know you usually wont make back what you spend on a car but can you really get good money from breaking a car?

Just seems like a lot of time, effort and hassle for not a lot of return?? Maybe I'm wrong?

If I bought a Series 2 RS Turbo for a grand could I expect a fast turnaround and a decent profit from it?

If you can pick up a car cheap enough with a vision in breaking it and making a few quid all well n good,

with regards to people who spend big money on their cossies, the simple fact is their worth more in bits than trying to sell the car in one piece,

even if I spent a 100k on my car its still only a 1990 4x4 saph cossie, there is no way someone would buy it off me for 100k

that was just an example figure mind its don't owe me a 100k well not yet anyway

storage of parts is critical when nacking cars, best place to store them is on the car itself

you normally get stuck with big lumps like the trim thats hard to throw away if it dont sell

I know it depends on popularity of the car and any performance parts etc but how long does it take to make that kind of cash? Do you have to be very strict with yourself when it comes to prices or can you just sell bits off cheap and still make decent pennies? I'm seriously thinking about breaking my Zetec Turbo once I'm done with it and if it's worth it I'll use the cash to buy another couple of breakers.

It can be worth it if you buy the right stuff. I've done it in the past. It can be a lot of hassle at the low end of the market though. I've just bought a MK2 Mondeo Ghia X for not a lot that I might well break when I'm finished with it. Though I'd sooner sell it complete to save hassle to be honest. It's having space to keep the parts really.

I can understand to a degree why people break big project cars, but at the same time, I don't really see the point, as it does seem a bit of a waste, especially when they do it as soon as they're finished.

At the end of the day, cars are my hobby, I don't do it to make money, I do it because I enjoy it!

The scrappies round here pay 150 quid for any car. I've paid more than that for an engine from them before. Suppose they must make a fortune.

people break their own cars because they cant sell them for teh money, i very much bought these big spec cars return what they get put it because if you buy a Ł1000 turbo new and run it for a month its not worth the 1k it cost

breaking cars you bought to do so is ok but you need to
:1 find the cars
:2 sell the parts at a profit (ebay costs are high these days)
:3 not get stuck with parts which wont sell and are where your profit is
if you buy an rst for Ł500 and sell the interior kit and wheels for Ł500 you are still not any money up and if you cant sell teh rest then your time and money only returned this pile of parts

i still have focus st (225) full running gear, doors, dash, airbags shocks exhaust etc etc but i couldnt sell them so now they are all in my way but i wont sell them for a quid so there they will stay maybe because i over value them but surely a mint mk2 focus door with all internals and glass has to be worth Ł50!!!

I suppose I'm at an advantage because I built my car using second hand parts wherever possible so I'll maybe get back what I've spent. I just want Ł2000 to put towards another car but I really can't be arsed with all the timewasters you come across when trying to sell a motor.

I put a time limit of about a month...

Its all about finding the right car and cheap, the TF I bought was a previous cat D, had no MOT and had been left in a garden for about 3 years! and the owner didn't know it was a VVC 160.

Cleaned it up checked engine was ok, then stripped all the valuable bits off, Seats & Door cards, CD, steering wheel, wheels, boot lid, engine wheels, roof, engine and loom, front and rear subframe, then scrap the rest, I don't bother with bits of trim as people want to pay fuck all for them and I cant be assed to send loads of stupid little bits.

Also I sell on owners clubs etc, not ebay because the fees are OTT nowadays! But I dont do loads so I'm not classed as a trader done 2 this year.

It would sometimes take longer than a month to sell a car these days so that's not bad at all mate. Maybe I should start looking for TFs!

Yeah I don't think I'd bother storing trim or anything, just chuck it when you scrap the remains, unless it was something old where it might be sought after.

It's a lot of hassle for the gains I think, unless you find something good to do of course.
