That looks horrid and will age fast imo bud.
VW are good BM etc,my mum had one of these from new 58 plate.Tbh I was very impressed, good spec as standard high 50's mpg on a run and really comfy and nice to drive.I have owned at least 60 of my own cars and driven thousands in the past with family having a garage/sales and car hire.Like I say I couldnt really fault this. One niggle,no rear wiper.

I would tempted to go along the lines of something like a BMW 320 diesel 60+mpg but be sure to check service history especially to see if it's had a new turbo as they are quite prone to blowing them, also the bottom crankshaft pulleys can become worn and rattle about which sounds like a big end. Vws/audisand seats etc are ok ish only the newer models the oil pump runs off a silly little hexagonal rod which are again prone to ware causing low oil pressure resulting in 1stly turbo failure then the bottom end. Another thing to watch out for is the injectors if these fail your looking at the best part of 2k, Also I wouldn't be going for something that has been remapped either as it's more strain on the engine.
The newer peugeots are quite reasonable too these days my dad has one sure it's a 307 and think it's a 1600cc hdi that's awesome on fuel but I suppose the older you get the more respectably you drive things thus saving fuel lol
No doubt which ever car you think about there'll be loads of pros and cons you'll just have to way them up and ask advice

Might be worth taking a look at Jag X type 2.0D, very, very good value for money, will get him a nice late plate car.
I got offered one a couple of weeks ago on an 06 with FSH for £2750

as what langer said, if you decide to go for a e46 bmw 320d, check to see what repairs it has done
the car can be fine at one moment then suddenly the turbo shits itself, its ment to be because of the breathers being blocked and the pressure builds up. Thats what ive heard anyway
People have also mentioned the swirl flaps in the intake manifold too
get one if your feeling lucky, good mpg's, low tax and do go well

I have given a pal a ring who lives by the Passat, he's warned me about DMF's and timing belts needing doing, but it's FSH so will check it over but all cars have issues enit.
Will do Tony mate, even though that Jag does look good, bit Phil Mitchel though enit
Ugly as Shrek though aint they

You'll run into injector, pump, and DMF/clutch issues on pretty much all common rail diesels. They aren't always 'known faults', but more 'fucking expensive service items'.
Often it's best to not get the lowest mileage one as the chances are it's not been through the 'expensive consumables' yet. I'd rather buy a 120K Mondeo TDCI that had had a pump, injectors and DMF in its life, than a 60K one that hadn't!
For 5K I'd be looking at an ST TDCI, but then I'm a Mondeo-bummer!

vw is where it's at, not the quietest engine by any standards, but great power and economy, i have a 53plate bora, got it for £2500 on 128k miles, only needed a clutch and has been spot on, even after a remap taking it to 170bhp from the pretty respectable 130bhp it began with.
for 5k i'd recon on a 55plate passat really, just get one with the gadgets and all that, very smooth cars to be in. the only niggle is suspension is a bit too soft, doesn't like corners at speed, but is very comfortable and i've seen 62mpg on a run sitting around 70mph on cruise control.
so in all perfect for a 60 something bloke that want's comfort and a bit of poke.

After looking at a few today decided it's between A4 estate and Passat 2L TDSi estate.
Looked at a few -
Passat 2L D - £4995 - 94K scrathed, needed tyres and short MOT, left it alone.
Passat 1.9 D £4999 - 88K nothing at all wrong with it but at only 105BHP was bland and slow.
Passat 2.0 TDSi Auto estate 130K £4995 - great car!!! nice interior / exterior - drove amazing and had had, injecter and two belts last one being 5K ago.
Needed bonnet spraying though which he said he'd do for asking price and 12 months MOT with 3 month warranty, thinking it over now.
But decided if I add another £1000 it will widen my search a bit lol

Have a look at a 530d. I know it's not 2 litre, but with an auto box they make a fantastic road trip car, and still does 40+mpg with 90mph cruising, and is just shy of 200bhp with masses of torque everywhere. They are seriously good cars, have a look on here for threads about them, I have been totally won over by mine, how is it possible to ENJOY driving an automatic diesel?
.. I have done 16k miles since March in mine, it has been flawless.
The other point to consider is does your dad actually do enough miles to make a diesel pay? Less than 15k a year and it will not be any cheaper than running a petrol, plus the cost of diesel maintainance can be very steep!

He can't half clock up the miles mate, he had a TD5 that I sold him a few years back and he put shit loads of miles on it and thats not really good MPG either
If you go Veedub, avoid early 2.0 TDis as they have a terrible habit of cracking cylinder heads... Nearly all of the early ones have failed. 2007 on should be good but probably not within your budget.
I'd get a Mondeo, as new as possible with as many miles as possible as long as it wasn't used as a taxi. From my experience, the typical 3 or 4 year old sales rep car with astronomical mileage still drives a lot better than a 8 or 10 year old supposedly pampered OAP city runabout...

To be honest, unless he's planning on doing 20k plus miles a year i'd avoid the higher purchase price, higer servicing costs, and higher likely costs of repair of a biggish diesel saloon
Petrol is cheaper and will remain so, petrol cars are cheaper to buy, petrol cars are more reliable IMO with less likelyhood of meeting big bill
The money saved on the purchase and servicing and the lower cost of petrol will even out the ownership cost despite the lower mpg if you get a sensible petrol model unless he's doing biggish mileages
