How To......
Distinguish if a problem I have is my clutch release bearing or something else….
The noise is there when you lift the clutch up in neutral (not really loud) and it does go again when I dip the clutch…. Ok…..
But, the noise is there also when I pull away in first, not really a grinding noise but there is an annoying noise there, once you hit second and third it’s gone.
Before I got the car last year it has just had a new clutch fitted. The noise seemed to be apparent not long after I had it, but I have not worried about it.
My mate told me that the clutch release bearing is an additional part for a clutch kit and doesn’t always get replaced, is that true? And is this likely my problem?
The box feels 100% no jumping outta gears or trouble getting in gear (even reverse!) The clutch is the same, very good, but it was new so I expected that…. My main concern is just establishing exactly what the problem is really, If it is the box or something, no problem as at some point the car will be off the road (again!
) for a engine rebuild I’m saving for…. But in the mean time if I can get the release bearing sorted I will, anyone know how much they are and how much a garage would sting me for replacing it?
Cheers all.

I have got a similar problem....
When i down gear and the engine is on overrun, there is a grinding noise.
Also in the low gears.
I have no problem selecting gears nor does it jump outta gear.
It's the main shaft bearing on the gear box.

It's funny you should say that...I myself though't it might be the box, but the other thing I forgot to mention is this car has only covered 52K miles from new! And the one previous owner was shall we say, on the old side and hardly gave it any stick, so I can't see how the box could be fooked after this amount of time plus the car was totally standard when I got it and still is in the terms of boost, it ain't even chipped!
(although I don't rule it out being the problem?)
Also, sorry, my noise is not a grinding noise, more like a "weeering" noise, it's really hard to explain... so not sure.....
I have a spare box of my old S2 (which had done 150K!) and that is solid with no noises, but I won't fit it, i'll use the current box to be rebuilt I should think (if indeed it is the box?

Hi Stoo,
Hmmm, no not really I wouldn't say so, as I mention above it sounds like clutch release when stationary, then pulling away it sorta just "weeers" lol a bit when pulling away, not like a proper whine noise when a box is proper fooked!
it is very hard to explain, what do you think it could be?
