Default Painted my car today - with a roller

with the onset of winter i needed to get a coat of paint onto my cheapo toy, after see what can be achieved from people on here and other forums i thought i'd give it a go.

the car is never gonna be concours it was bought as an mot failure and will be hopefully used as a budget track car next year.

the finish isnt perfect but the car is protected for the winter & everything to do the job cost less than £50

before-

1st coat dry on wing & door, still wet on quarter

2nd coat wet

the colour is satin black, considering i had mates quoting £400 to just spray the car solid black with no garuantees as i was doing the prep, i'm well happy with how this turned out.

what do you guys think?

thanks for the comments

i agree £400 is a bargain but i only paid £100 for the car and ive done quite a few body repairs to the car, being just a keen amatuer there are some imperfections which is why i went for satin.

the job is good for the winter, i have enough materials left to do another car so in the summer i could flat it and spray on a coat of the same paint (another learning curve)!

go for it mate, it took me about 10 hours to strip, mask, sand, panel wipe, 2 coats & rebuild spread over 3 days.

the paint is called rustoleum, i got it from combicolour who import it from the states where hand painting cars is alot more common.
http://www.rustoleum.co.uk/colourselect/1/19
http://rolledon.forummotion.com/forum.htm

if you use the gloss paint you can colour sand & polish it. i found a site where a guy painted his dodge charger orange, he did 6 coats, wet sanding between coats then a final polish. the finish was amazing, better than you could spray a single stage colour.

To be honest mate its not gonna win any concourse shows, but it not a concours car is it, for the track you have done a really good job, maybe a bit of flatting and some rattle laquer and the finish could be even better. Get some stickers slapped onto it and its job done i think. Its also got the euro rat look about it which has been really popular this year. Keep it up mate

And keep the updates coming

im doing a V6 cosworth into my sapphire was thinking about a quick paint job until next year you have just solved my problem for me what kind of roller did you use was it foam or wool type cheers steve.

4" gloss rollers - got 10 sleeves, a tray & handle for £8 in wickes, only used 2 sleeves though (1 per coat)
used a 2" brush to get the paint into all the hard to reach areas then rollered over the top to level it out.
there was lots of primer on the car as i had repaired a lot of dents, rust & damaged panels. i rubbed the whole car down with 400 grit wet & dry and panel wiped before painting. you will need to thin the paint down a bit first, white spirit was recommend for the paint i used.
the paint used is called rustoleum, there is a link to the site above. it is best paint i have ever used. i did a test by painting a larger can u few days before i did the car, brushed it onto the can straight out of the recycling bin - no prep, took about 10 hours to be completely dry. crushed the can to see if it would flake or crack but no, it even hard work to scratch it off. the can has been left out in the weather for 3 weeks and the colour is like the day it was painted. im well impressed with it.

Looks so much better than what i was expecting to find. Fair play to ya mate for giving it a go yourself instead of paying out bodyshop costs.
