Default CURIOUS NEW ADDITION IN ENGINE BAY - Sierra Cosworth 4x4

HI all

After a second trip to german specialist after the first attempt to fix an oil leak failed (new seals and head gaskset) I've got a bizarre new addition in my engine bay.

A metal triangular box bolted inbewteen the battery and turbo (left hooker) with tubing running from the engine, injector side, into it and a second hose out the other side. Think there is a 3rd hose out the bottom.

The air filter has been disconnected (noticeable oil getting in there and leaking)

Fairly new to this game but is it a breather tank?

It looks shocking and if im not mistaken possibly inhouse fabricated...would post pics but newby account won't let me

any help/advice would be great.

cheers for the advice -

how much of mare are they to install - seeing as he seems to have botched it anyways?

Something a decent garage could do for example? Not really keen on giving this guy any more money

i would imagine if the pipework has already been done to yours it would just be a case of disconnecting the hoses and maybe a bracket and fit in a purpose built one.
Mines is on the oposite side from yours right enough.
Search through some cossie engine bay pics on here, you'll see they are quite popular

As said defo a breather system, which was never much good as standard on the cossie.
Where were your leaks from ?, as it seems a odd way of doing things after what he's already done, also what spec is the engine ?

Hey - sorry not been on forum for a while.

Leak seemed primarily around the air filter/dump valve area. I knew of the air filter issue but assumed the reseal/gasket would have sorted it - evidentally it didn't and suggests a larger issue with the pistons (rebore looking likely long term).

Engine is as standard though I did get her chipped up to 280 whilst in the shop.

I now have a high/temperamental idle and just recently started misfiring which the car NEVER did before.

Any suggestions welcome - shame I can post images, it's really quite comical to look at. If it's not your car that is.

Looking at breather tank online and they all have 4 outlets/points yet the botch DIY the mechanic put in seems to only have 3 - could he have simply decided not to feedback to the air filter to avoid any further leaks?

Cheers - breather on the bay ends tonight so any quick thoughts would be much appreciated.

cheers for the images LH - what was the spec of the breather - curious if you connected back up to the air filter?

Mine is now disconnected/redundant.

the baily breather tank has a pipe from the breather hole on the inlet side to one of the top inlets of the tank the other top inlet can have a filter on it like mine or if you drill out the hole at the back of the rocker cover you have to remove it to find the place to drill as its has a cast mark on the under side

then you have a large pipe on the bottom witch drops down to atmosphere then theres an angled out let witch drains oil that it catches back to the sump via the removeable bung on the exhast side its the lower one as the one above has coolant behind it

i do not use the air box to breather its blanked off if your getting lots of oil in your air box its due to high crankcase pressure due to worn bores/ring some is expected and a drop of oil does make a lot of mess

best not to drain to that plug as you need to drain to below the oil level, either sump plug adapter of drill and tap the sump to accept a fitting
