i only had a very quick read, it sounds to me what ford called "egr als"

Yes, very similar. Here is the Ford's version of the air feeds for the zetec flange. Haven't got around to doing anything with it yet.

Didn't some of the WRC cossies use a tank of air behind the rear bumper for off throttle to keep the turbo spooling?

no, but they do store a little compressed air to run some solenoids

Interesting read, I see mention of my old mechanic from my VW days...Bruno Kreibich. First time I saw a Rallye car in person was his, still remember every detail of it.

So its just transfering cold, pressurised air from the inlet into the exhaust manifold to keep the turbo spinning when the engine cant consume the full amount of air being supplied?

Yes, and extra fuel is being injected to continue burning in the manifold to spool the turbo. This makes the turbo spin more or less on its own if wanted undependent of the engine load. This kind of makes the turbo a bit like a jet engine. Turbos have been converted to jet engines time and time again. Not that different in the end.
