My dad has just had a stroke, he is 57 years old. Currently he is in hospital recovering! His left hand side has been affected with damaged mobility of his limbs and lost the vision in his left eye. Also he speaks slower.

I am wondering if anybody want to share their experiance (good or bad) of family or friends that have had strokes and how quickly/slowly they recovered? and level of recovary.

depends on each individual case. a stroke is like a heart attack and the longer untreated, the more brain tissue will die and the more damage is done. Obviously dead tissue cant be replaced. what movement comes back depends on the damaged cells recovering and also the power of the brain to relearn different functions via different neural pathways.

I'm not sure how much help this will be but I've had a few people in my life suffer strokes. My best pal just had a stroke at the beginning of November - he was 30yrs old when it happened.

He's been pretty lucky as he's pretty much back to normal already and managed to have an enjoyable Xmas with his family. He still says he's tired a lot and he sometimes gets pain in his left side but other than that, he's fine.

The Docs did say it would be best part of a year before he's 100% again tho.

If you're Dad is on the mend then that's great news but be patient as it will take time and listen to what the Specialists say.

Sounds like he's over the worst of it now and I'm glad to here he's on the mend and still around as they can be very severe - a guy I worked with was 26 when he had a stroke in May 2008 and died.

My Aunt has had 3 strokes in her time and you would never know so that shows there's plenty light at the end of the tunnel. She was 50 when suffered her 1st one and is now 66 and still going strong.

my auntie had a few strokes and must say its a battle
just be prepared to be very supportive , as its such a horrible thing to happen both mentally and physically also

my auntie suffered two minor strokes very close together ,which in all fairness werent really that bad , she did loose some movement down her right side and her speech was slightly slurred
just as she was recovering she suffered another bigger more serious stroke which was much worse ( common to suffer more than one stroke be warned)
this left her unable to walk unaided (sticks) and limited movement !!!

she went through the emotions as you would expect .... anger,upset,guilt
feeling sorry for herself etc etc
one day had a chat with her and we both decided to see if we could at least get her to walk unaided !!

motivation sorted she moved in with us and me and my family helped her

started slowly with little things like the tennis ball exercise as she had no grip at all in one hand
i bought a tennis ball and drilled a big hole in it so it was easier to squeeze !!
gave her the ball and told her to execise by squeezing as hard as she could
within 2 months she could pick a biro up and hold it no probs!!!
that was the key for her mentally as she knew she had improved

in a nutshell in 3 years we had her walking and would say 70% recovered

just make sure you are SUPPORTIVE , AND KEEEP HIM MOTIVATED AND EXERCISED OTHERWISE ITS A DOWNWARD SPIRAL!!!

its all down to motivation and exercise but your dad will have to WANT it for himself also

stick with it mate its a toughy but there is light at end of tunnel

sorry to hear that mate, but all isnot lost,
my g.dad had one, quite a bad one, lost all mobilty down the left side, and although that was ahwile now, he still struggles a bit wioth his left arm.

however, as people go,he isnt very healthy (2 pachs of cigs a day for 65+ years etc) , and he was far older than 57, so, with my limited knowledge, i would say your dad has a top chance of returning almost fully to normal.

i hope he does mate, good luck with the futre

Sorry to hear this mate, i lost my dad to a stroke in feb, and my wife's stepmum had a minor stroke 2 mths later.

from her experience, she has 90% recovered, but she is a hell of a lot slower, and gets tired very quickly!

but TBH she recovered very quickly!

My mother in law had a stroke in November and she is going down hill im afraid, 2010 is not going to be good.

I think a lot of it is your mental state and your willingness to get better.

my cousin had a stroke years ago, he was 48
he said that it was like a heart attack of the brain
he lost laods of weight but it was apparently a mild one so he's got better

like warrne says, it will be different for every individual case, but i hope he gets better soon

A lot depends on where the brain was damaged, if it involves any part of the left ventrical, it usually causes artery hardening in certain areas around the heart, but as it is his left side affected, it will be his right side of the brain affected, and vice versa, so better news.
Do try not to worry, many many people lead amazingly normal lives even after this, with just minor adjustments.

I have damaged left ventrical, part missing/mishapen/irregular, plus fronm part of brain left side missing, but there is NO outward sign of this, other than terrible memory for faces, that I see "out of context".
My gf had a stroke at age 3-4 years old, causing here partial paralysis on left side with cubitta fossa syndrome(arm) and maralgia parasthetica(leg), but she's gets about ok, can run 1 hour on treadmill!!
I had my first MI, myocardial infarction, heatr attack some 2 months ago, was quite exciting really, just got put on more bloody medicine as a result, but have found the most awsome "medicine" ever, not a prescribed one, everyone can buy it, and it is f*****g awsome, I would not beleive it could do what it's done, it's truly amazing and 100 natural, and not that expensive either.

You did say good or bad experiences in your first post.

My mom had 3 strokes with the 3rd one taking her life, was a terrible time for us as you can imagine, the first one she recovered from very well, no speech loss although her left-hand side did suffer slighty she recovered well from that too. It was 2 and 3 that were bad, the 2ns took her sight and speech, she was just SO fragile and spent over 4 weeks just bed bound and to see your mom in this state is/was heart-wrenching, this will sound really cold mate. but me & my two sisters almost got to the stage where we wanted her to suffer no longer if you understand that.

Anyway, i don,t want to go all morbid etc, just stay posotive with your dad mate, people do recover from strokes and recover VERY well too Simon, so support him everyway you can which i know you will and i,m sure he,ll be on the mend..
