How smooth is your modded Cossie?
How smooth at tick over, part throttle, generally poodling around should a Cossie be?
one that's been cam'd, p+p, greys, Msd chipped,
Mine seems to miss a beat when not flat out, is this normal?
Will it get smoother when I fit the wasted spark system?

100% smooth is the answer, when all is right.
I run greys, ported head, etc and it is smoother than me dads mondeo auto, smoother but not quieter, seriously can't feel any virabtion at idle.
I use V power and do find though that if I use a different fuel, even BP ultimate etc have the slight roughness, if I use esso it runs badly and flat, tesco 99 is next best for mine.

Yes it should run ok if everything is running ok. Mine is 400bhp (stroked) with greys etc and only having some vibration on idle due to the vibratechnic engine mounts but since you put it on gear and travel no problem: to give you an idea I can put 4th on a straight road and the car will travel on idle with 500 - 600rpm! I also having missfires sometimes on full throtlle above 4000rpm but soon I will throw away the old ignition system and I ''ll put wasted spark.

Some interesting sugegstions here given that nobody knows what:
A) Cams he has.
B) Size ports he has.
These two things influecne driveability more than any other aspect of the engine.

It's got a bd10 and 14 cams, 24.5mm ports(pretty sure that's correct) 10mm inlet spacer with 4x4 cover. 8-1 CR
It drives fine when driving hard when I said miss a beat I meant when casually driving it stutters slightly, doesn't feel like it's blowing the spark out.
I think it's more to do with the old loom than anything.
B4 getting it on rollers for a check over/thumbs up I'm going to get a new loom, wasted spark fitted, new plugs and some new sensors.
That's me skint for another couple of weeks LOL

Forgive the off thread question, but what advantage does a wasted spark system give? I always thought this was old system that was done away with... I await to be corrected lol

So with a new loom and a coilpack upgrade it should be 100% but all things are not a easy as that lol sensors which are gapped must me good and within spec and also the mechanicals too a worn dizzy shaft can cause gap issues with the phase sensor etc etc
Make sure your loom maker knows what spec you want ie wasted spark this will save unessesary multiplugs and will make installation easier

I'm sure Stu can explain more in one of his Technical essays

The looms are old not and degrade over the years and if the ignition system is not 100% then you can get the shudder you are talking about, which nearly every cossie owner has encountered!!

This is what I'm thinking. I'm gunna build my own loom, ordering the bits this weekend.
Can't wait for the loom and wasted spark to go in.
Coilpacks came about due to cost, ie it is cheaper to make than a dizzy, plus more reliable.
Dizzies can wear badly the crushed iron particle bush on the std ones, does not cope well with any amount of getting too hot, I always replace these with oilite.
A std ignition system in decent order will cope perfectly, but of course any extra bit these have compared with coilpacks is just one extra potential bit to go wrong.
I had a stutter on my old L6 ecu, despite being pronounced fit for service, but it was only slight, just above idle when reapplying throttle, so could work around it.
Found out what it was when new ecu went on, as it was horrendous, and had to fit a new TPS(universal one) before mapping could be easily accomplished, as it was stuttering massively when new ecu wasn't pouring fuel in like old one, whcih masked the problem mostly.
I had done a voltage check moving tps as slow as possible but could not find any dead spot on old ecu.

totally agree mate, slow air speed, and there no amount of mapping can get rid of the fundamentals
The only issue i have with mine is it's ticking over high which once i get my arse into gear is an easy sort.
As for the engine it's perfect, MSD did set the car up well and it pulls right through the gears no problems. The car is fitted with L8 and wasted spark so comparing it to the old coil and L1 setup it's awesome.

Mine drives perfect on or off boost.
1000cc wild cams and a t4......
If its built and mapped right then it will drive perfect if its built wrong or more the point mapped wrong it will drive shite unless somert is broken

well turns out the alternator had packed up so it was running off the battery
So obviously sensors were giving the correct Reading.
I've just got it rebuilt so will b fitting it tonight. That should help.
Also all the parts turned up for me to make the loom, unfortunately I wasn't in so gotta collect them tomorow so by the weekend it should have a nice new loom on it.
