Default Can only drive in reverse gear?

I've recently got an MR2. It will move a few foot in 1st gear when started from cold, but there is suddenly a loud jarring noise and you get no more drive. The noise sounds a bit like when you use an air gun to tighten something and when it's at the correct torque it'll click.

So basically, when I let the clutch out, it'll do that and not move. It does the same in 2nd gear. I can slip the clutch loads and it'll move little before doing it. If it's in reverse, it goes fine, no problems at all.

I've bought a new box to fit, just wondering if anyone has come across this before and if so, what was the cause?

Usually totally knackered cogs or bearings allowing gears to seperate away.
