Default I got to drive an E46 M3 - WOW!

On fri night my pal popped in past mine with an 13k miles 03 manual box M3 that he picked up on the cheap and was selling to a garage. It came with half a tank so he thought he'd spank it
the car was cheap because it had missed the 1200 mile service which RW tells me is a big NO NO? The rest of the servicing was done by the owner who had a garage himself. There was no history at all

Anyway we had a look round it then he said go on take it for a spin RW previously said i could drive his but it was december and pishing with rain so declined the wonderful offer. So i jumped in with my cousin and thought my pal and his bro would wait behind. but no they jumped in so i was thinking 4 up it would be a let down

Slowly went up my street over the speedbumps. Out on to the next street and booted it gently from low revs in 1st. WOW what a response! It caught me off guard as it pulled much better than i imagined. Up to the top of the street and out to the dual carriageway where i gave it beans up to a decent figure in 5th! To say i was impressed would be a massive understatement.

I dont know if its because my cossie has been off the road for so long and i havent driven fast cars other than a couple of evos but it felt fantastic. What an awesome classy, reliable, powerful all rounder!

I want one, BASTARD!

I think its just a warranty thing. If the M3's Warranty had expired then certain items would not be covered under warranty if thay fail. The 1200 mile service is to remove the 'running in' oil to replace with normal oil.

Running in service is really important. The oil thats in the engine & diff is run in oil not meant for any more than 1200 miles,we had one in that had vanos issues & needed a rear diff because it missed the service & the warranty was void because this. The strupd thing is the 1200 miles service is free its included in the sale of the car so there is no reason it shouldnt have been done apart from lazyness or if its a import.

Just your luck really we have a few in thats had no probs at all sold by other dealers & a few imports thats been in & away with no troubles,if you get it cheap enough & make sure you use the correct castrol oil should be right enough.I just wouldnt spend really good money on one thats missed it,& accept that if anything did go wrong that there would be no goodwill at all from BMW

from what i've heard, for a road car you're better off the with standard M3 or CS. the CSLs are a lot more money, and don't really offer anything worth having unless youre planning on using the car properly.

never driven either tho...

I've only driven one and I fell in love with it too. I'd really like one but tyre prices and running costs are putting me right off just now.

what like is servicing and how often?

Servicing 9-14k miles depending how hard its driven or every 2 years insp 1 & insp 2 can cost between Ł600 - Ł800 in a BMW dealership, tyres can be expensive if you buy them from a dealership but if you look hard enough or have mates that work in that enviroment they aint that expensive.I had mine a while ago & for about 55 quid i was getting about 340 miles roughly that was all kinds of driving.Front brakes are quite expensive but i never had to replace them in the 8k miles i done in it.Although braking from about 150 + there was a little thrum off them.If you weigh it up from cossie ownership & what you might spend in a year keeping them going all you really need to do on the m3 is service it properly with the correct oil (most important) rear coil springs are notorious for breaking best to buy new ones from BMW about Ł140 easy to fit undo the shocker bolt & lever it down. Then you get a 2 year warranty with the springs so not that bad & as long as its in the 2 year period there is no way they wont replace them,

Bear in mind the inspection services are every 2nd service,so it gets oil service,insp1,oil service, insp 2,then same again.Oil service is about Ł170 depending on dealership. So the insp services arent every year so not too bad

Ł55 for 340 miles doesnt sound so bad. i guess fuel is a lot more expensive now but maybe still not as bad as i guessed.

Do they NEED Super?

Anyone LPG'd one? being a scot thats what i'd prefer
