Default Did you know van speed limits are lower?

Since C4llyT bought it to my attention that vans have a speed limit of 50 mph on single carriageway (I knew was 60mph on a dual) who else actually realised this? To be honest I didn't know, just interested to see how many other people aren't actually aware of this

No limits for vans whatsoever over here in Germany...

Transits run 100+ mph no problem and they don't feel like they're unsafe in any way at that speed. 50 mph sounds like a bad joke...

Our roads are absolutely shot! You get huge potholes everywhere and the Autobahn is crowded with barely roadworthy lorries from the east.

Sorry, I guess I didn't properly read the first post. We do have a general limit of 62 mph (100 km/h) on single carriageways that applys to all cars up to 3,5 tons.

no..its not a van ... people carriers can speed along at full whack with 7 lives in whilst the poor bloke on his own driving a van gets penalised .......

it dont matter that the vito or v class are fundamntally the same ... its a van .. its not allowed to go as fast as the car version...

vans derived from car chassis are a big grey area in the mind of most traffic police ... if it looks like a van then you will get tugged if they feel like it..

have had the same argument with many police officrs in the south of england... they are never wrong don't forget...

The 50mph does not apply to all vans.

thats going into class c teritory

the vaneo thing falls into the cars derived from vans category so "should" be classed as a van, the same with a lot of the vw transporter things, but 'm not sure how they go about dealing with them so i couldn't possibly comment

i think its doesnt include vans that are based on car chassis but i did know that transit vans are limited to 10mph below cars as i got done for it a few years back when i was unaware of it as the limit for the van was 50 in the 60.

this is pretty much the same with lorries and coaches too!can never understand why they can whisk along at speeds far in excess of mine with kids etc on board when im only carrying boxes of stuff!
another thing is that within that lower speed limit a lot of people do not actually realise what a dual carriageway is!!! even if there are 2 lanes going in your direction this can be a single carriageway, and vice versa, there are dual carriageways with one lane going each way,it has bugger all to do with lane numbers, its all about the separation of traffic travelling in different directions,ie a central reservationmarks a dual carriageway

2 tonne mate.
Is such a grey area regarding a few vans, just safest to say all vans IMHO - as this thread proves most aren't aware of the different speed limits, so getting into car derivitives and gvw's is a bit of an ask!
Also as Big Wig has said, many fail to understand a single carriageway can have 2 lanes in your direction, so beat along at 70 - coupled to driving a van, which should only do 50, you're getting a bit far over for comfort.

No doubt this poll is a dig at me, but people will be learning something new, always good to learn.

Nah, not lately.
I just get done in hgv's - safer to go flat out than ponce along at 40, less and less cops appreciate this now though.
Just from another thread, I was seen as unreasonable for expecting people who drive for a living to be aware of speed limits for the vehicles they drive.

Told, Vans lower speed limits is due to having no rear quarter windows ( limited vision )

Hence why the ol' Mk 3/4 Escort Vans had the little B pilllar quarter glass's to be legal of normal car speed limits.

yeah, 7.5 tonne and over can only go 40mph on a single carriageway, and 50mph on a road with a central reservation. whatever the speed limit says, that the max. speed limiters are different speeds too.

No excuse as far as I'm concerned, but not going to get into an argument over it.

You obviously read everything that I said out of context, I never said at all it was unreasonable for you to suggest people ensure they comply with the law, I even admit I checked the rules before towing and yes I am licenced to tow, pmsl; this poll had nothing to do with a 'dig' at you, I really wasn't aware of the limit for vans on single carriageway (as I said I don't drive a van (only a FIESTA van now and again) I was curious to know just how many people don't know this either as I am sure there are a lot, granted most of the people I asked don't drive vans anyway. I never said the person who was doing 65mph in non car derived van in a NSL wasn't aware of the rules either, least it was only 65, unlike the tossers in vans who push you along the motorway and fly past way past 60...

Go re-read my posts if you can be bothered, I never once implied people should be ignorant or disagreed with you, you wanted to make a thing about it chill out dude ffs

I drive a Citroen Berlingo and just drive at the normal limits.

I got pulled in a LDV van years ago for doing over 70mph on the a14 and was informed that the limit in that van should of been 60mph, I've always been cautious since then as I don't know what vans the rules apply to

Is it the Berlingo that isn't a car derived van, as it was a van before being a car? lol.
Think the logbooks let you know what a van is, or maybe tax disc, or both.

Cabrio - Yes I mistook your posting, apologies!

I know older caddy vans are car derived but the newer ones aren't

Now I think your just patronising me (isn't pmt great) I blame it the fact people mistake your Cally chips ex girlfriend rather than being a Luton Shed fan (although I may admit I like Calibras and nearly bought one )

I actually thank you that if I ever have to drive the Trafic I wont go over 50 in an nsl, that will ensure my many years of clean licence remain that way!

Belingo IS a car derived van, it's the same body as my Peugeot Partner, which is stated as "car derived" on the log book.

Goods vehicles under 2 tonne are also O.K with the car speed limits, but there are very few models that are under 2 tonne now.

What bloody van am I thinking of then?!

I do need a change of username, had a different car for 2.5 years now lol.
Recently sold by brother on 150k miles, ran 1.5 bar for years, and about 800 miles a week commuting for his work for months, refused to die, and still did over 40mpg with that tall 6th gear.

You now knowing these different limits means this has all been worthwhile, knowledge is good.
