Hi folks, I've got a 1996 N reg reg 1.6i Zetec Escort Cabriolet Calypso and the temp gauge isn't working. I thought it was the gauge on the clocks so bought some different clocks but it's still not working. The engine is getting warm but nothing at all on the gauge.
Can anyone give me anything to check to prove what the problem is? I've looked in the Haynes book and the manual for the car and neither are particularly helpful.
Can anyone point me at any fuses/relays etc. I just need to get this sorted out now. All the fuses in the main fusebox under the dash seem fine by the way.
Getting a bit frustrated now, because I dismantled all the dash to put these new clocks in, removing the speedo cable was an utter nightmare AGAIN, and I'm still no further forward.
Any help gratefully received.

Have you tried changing the sensor/sender?
When i got my zetec cabriolet i had exactly the same as you and it was the sensor
only a couple of quid from a motor factors

It's most likely the sender.
iirc they are pretty easy to get to as well as they'e at the front on the right hand side of the exhaust manifold? If you have the haynes manual, it'll all be in there.
Any motor factors will do you one for a few quid and you can change it in no time.

Thanks for the replies guys. Is it this one? PS I know the plug clip is knackered, I did that this morning, but I've still got the bit so it should superglue back on.

If it is this one will I be able to fit it without draining the coolant or will it all come spurting out if I take the other one out?

Ah, I see where it is now, thanks for that mate. I was trying to get that pic and upload the pic on that like and upload it but Photobucket seems to be shagged tonight, but I know the bit you mean, it's basically on the lower left of the thermostat housing, no wonder I couldn't find it.
Thanks to all, hopefully it's either the sender or a wire off then but I'll let you know how I get on.
I'm pretty sure I know where I can get one of those.

I think all you can see before you take it out is the brass bolt head type fitting. If I could upload the pic I'd put it on, but I can't at the moment.
But that link has really helped, thanks for that mate.
I dismantled all the dash today because I thought it was the clocks, because I'd just bought them and put them in, but it wasn't working so I took them out, and they didn't work on the spare set either. Oh well, at least I'm tracking it down slowly.

Thanks for all the help guys, I now have a working temp gauge and everything is back together. For the princely sum of Ł6.99 and a bit of elbow grease from me.

You're not kidding. The reason I did that was that I'd swapped the clocks over for the white faced ones and the gauge hadn't worked since. Must have just been a coincidence. All sorted now though and back in one piece. The old sender looked seriously knackered.
Not been a bad day here, dull earlier but I can even see a bit of bright sky at the moment, although I spose it'll be dark soon.
