Default Tapping noise from top end

My mates just bought an RST and its broke, no suprises here

Anyway, Its a pretty standard CVH, the tapping sounds to be coming from top end of piston no. 1. Is there a known fault for this? Sure there is? If so what's the fix? Have they got lash adjusters/tappits? that can be cleaned or replaced.

Its got an uprated cam and vernier, the pulley hasn't moved and the problems just started. So its nothin to do with clearance etc.

Care to explain a little please

Do they suffer from lack of oil or something?

UK Cam manufacturers are outsourcing cam blanks and particularly followers from China and India. In an engine that doesn't have a particularly great valvetrain design and will run a cam off in the blink of an eye, giving it any greater opportunity to do so, will be fatal for the cam.

Newman make their own stuff, but sadly that means going over to solid lifters. While this is a far better option for performance and eliminates the high-end missfires etc associated with 'other' manufactuers cam kits, it isn't an easy option to fit.

Right, its 115, for the 276 cam and Ł128 for the lifters.

The cam i've took out hasn't worn 2 badly at all though, so i have a feeling its the lash adjuster.

Could i clean them and try it out?

Could there be a blockage in the oil gallery? How would i go about cleaning this out.

Could well be the cam.

I took my old piper out, looked a the lobes and thought to myself "i've only had this a couple of months......shit!"

If not, then check thne usual suspects.

Low on oil
Wrong oil (Too thin)
Etc etc

try diconnecting spark plug lead on no1 cylinder, then start it, yes it will run rough but has the noise gone?

I would also have a look at the exhaust manifold gasket. If i's leaking the noise can be very similar to a noisy lifter.

i brought some 10w/40 castrol oil for mine and since ive used it its started to tap from the top end!

obviously is this down to the oil or just timing for the cam and lifters wanting to be changed
