Default Can I Connect a Lambda Sensor To My Car?

I'm going to be putting a lambda sensor in my exhaust so that i can keep an eye on the afr and wire up a turbo timer.

I have an L8 ECU i believe ('92 4x4) and was wondering if i could wire this to the ecu (i think this may have been removed at some point) and if it would do anything/work/be of any use or benifit?

Cheers,
Pete.

yes you can wire it up. the signal from the sensor needs to go to pin 2 and be earthed to pin 1.

it will only do something if the software in your chip is right though. if you have a standard chip from a green top 4x4 that was fitted with lambda sensor and cat to start with, then it will. most other chips will not.

Ok, so it'd do no harm in wiring it up but it probably won't do anything.

What are the advantages/disadvantages, if any, of having this if you have the correct chip? ie would it be worth changing chip?

Cheers,
Pete.

correct

if you have the correct chip, there are many advantages. the main point of the lambda sensor is to control the air/fuel mixture to a point that is where all the fuel that is injected has been burnt, rather than injecting too much and wasting it.

too much fuel also leaves deposits on the spark plugs, combustion chamber, pistons etc (used to be called coking up), and contaminates the oil meaning more frequent changes are needed.

so the main benefits are improved fuel economy (and fuel is not getting cheaper, so closed loop lambda control can pay for itself quite quickly) and a cleaner running engine.

there are probably better explanations than that on the 'net if you do a search

Well explained. Cheers. I shall bare this in mind for future reference when i start to change other bits but will do without for the mean time.

Thanks,
Pete.

The extra two are the heater wires, as it is a HEGO, ie HEATED EXHAUST GAS OXYGEN sensor, you can either leave disconnected and it will work fine just take a little longer to start working without the heater or wire the heater wires up to ignition live on "2".
