well.......i'm a little happier now anyway.
Some poor quality soldering in the faceplate was causing the fault, the red box on the left was particularly bad, all the solder joints had snapped where the ribbon doesn't sit against the board very well (pen used a yardstick so you can see how small the solder joints were
)

there was also another set of joints the same as the box on the right that needed soldering, just not pictured
VOILA!!!!!!!

duno probably could, depends how involved it is........
If its a straight drop in replacement then yea i could, if it needs setting up then i doubt i have enough knowledge.
And have you got a new laser for it? Not usually worth doing unless its a really good unit

Not got a laser. It's a good unit but out of warranty. Looks like new, but laser does not read the discs anymore. Been quoted Ł60 by Kenwood..and altho I've just bought a new head-unit it's a shame to bin this one

nothings worth anything anymore, electronics across the board have become so cheap its not worth fixing anything really
I had a go at fixing that because if you tapped the faceplate it would interfere so i hoped it was a soldering fix, and plus the fact that was anything between Ł500-Ł800 back in its day, the laser is possibly on its way out in that thoughnow, its old, might just need the lense cleaning but i doubt it
What was yours worth new?

From an extremely clever bloke i know ive picked up tips over the years, a couple of other things to try are blowing the laser assembly out with a can of air duster (invertible stuff is best incase it should decide to spray the propellant out), and also he mentioned removing the laser assemly, putting it in a piece of foil with some isopropyl alcohol, wrapping it up and giving it a shame to clean it.
Apparently the mirror below the lense also gets dirty.
Me myself i clean lenses with a cotton bud and non smear glass cleaner
