Default Turbo problem on my Italian sports car? ;)

Picked this up cheap yesterday, yes number one because of the bonnet scoop (which doesn't look that bad) number two the log book states it 1 litre but with the 1372 engine, all registered with DVLA as having engine transplant, comes up on insurance sites as Uno Turbo everything has been switched over including the beam for the rear discs, can see where old brake lines were and new breather added to fuel tank as wasn't injection previously etc was a 1 litre shell originally not a turbo with new ID so not a genuine Uno turbo but everything on it and has Arbarth bits too and, get this, no rot! lol

Bloke just had the headgasket done, adjustable boost, titanium shims, piper fast road cam and iridium plugs

Number three for the cheapness was it smokes terribly on start up from cold and slightly under load, but seems to go when warmed up - the seals on turbo gone? Gasket looks to be new.

Anyone know what turbo they have, if anyone still does them or where could have it re-con'd? Failing that may just stick it on ebay as is

Cheers chap, sound like a turbo problem to you then? It is white smoke and the tailpipe is slightly 'oily' smoke under load and start up when cold suggests the oil is seeping through

Wonder how big a turbo could squeeze in!

Wasn't that a piss take in a magazine, the engine shot was a badly photoshopped Buggatti EB110 round the wrong way IIRC

I fitted a rs cosworth t3 hybrid on mine you need to knock the bulk head back to make clearance and a adapter flange welded to your manifold and a down pipe for it to fit as I specialize in them if you get stuck you can pm me I personally think it could be seals in the head or valve guides plus the 1.4 suffer from pistons craking around the ring area I am currently rebuilding a engine for a customer with all forge internals had the same symptoms as you for the same car

Cool, can't find any info on the web at all about them, thought there must've been an owners club. Thanks for your advice/thoughts.

I did mention valve guides when J and I were discussing the smoke problem, what other seals in the head are there? Who on earth stocks parts for these now? Perhaps some of Jasons suppliers at work may do them.

Can get a cheap set of forged pistons and rings, but don't fancy spending that much on it - not sure what my engine building skills are like lol

the best test test for a smkey turbo is give it a blast out on a private road so its nice and hot....

leave it to stand ticking over for a couple of minutes, then as you pull away check to see if theres smoke behind you

basically, the seal expands when hot, and allows oil to seap past if its goosed
