My mate had someone try this when he auctioned a car.

Same set up! Think name might even be the same

Turned out he was trying to set up you collecting cheques for him from uk and posting to him in usa, as he sends you a cheque for more than cars selling...something like that anyway!

I'll speak to my mate later.

the nigerian scam is obviously well known however i thought it was only to do with 'western union' transfers/cheques i didnt realsie you could cancel a UK cheque after it had cleared!

A cheque can be returned by your bank weeks after funds have be 'cleared' into your account.

Cheques are not a secure method of payment.

Unless IIRC you express clear the cheque

just got hold of my mate.

exact same set up as he got put to him.

cabrio got it in one with the 'western union' transfer.

What happens is the buyer will send you a cheque substanaly higher than price of car, he claims an agent will collect car and deal with shipping. You have to return the higher value by 'western union' tranfer when an agent comes to collect the car.

The account you are paid from gives the buyer 14 days after clearence to cancel his cheque and take funds back out your account.

Therefore you give him your car + extra cash by 'western union' transfer and he takes the full amount of the inflatted cheque value back too

Tell him to pay you via bank transfer, that way there is no way he can claim the money back or cancel the cheque. Once its in your account, its there. But always call up the bank to make 100% certain the money is staying put!

Yeah leave him well alone. A guy tried it with my mate who fully re-built a Mini. He claimed to be American, but was a businessman in South Africa, living in France! Said he'd send the money and stuff, and would have it collected from his home address. Then all these stories started flooding in of people paying the money, then the cheque bouncing days after they collected the car. They even offered cash incentives if you dealt with it quickly etc. He tried to get the police involved, and they were up for it, but the guy smelt a rat and ceased contact. Mate got an almost identical email from a Belgian person a few days later. They just want to buy, not even bothered about the price or condition. Cash in hand...ya can't beat it.

DON'T SELL TO THIS GUY!!!

Yep this is a really common Nigerian scam - have heard of quite a few people who have been caught out by this one.

hi if you get a cheque from outside uk it takes upto 7 working days for the money to be in your account for you to draw it out BUT the cheque actually takes 30 days to clear i learnt this as an american bloke won an item of me on ebay sent me a cheque i put it in bank the money was there 4 days later si i sent the item of anyway drawn the money out spent it 30 days later they take the money back of me leaving my account over drawn by 120 quid. well the person in america received item and canceld cheque. fcuker well but this man is saying he is going to pay you by english cheque so they carnt really be a big problem just make sure the bank is a big bank like halifax barcleys not a little unknown back
