My RWD Saph overheated a tad coz the fans didnt come on! I've bridged the fan switch plug but still no joy.. I understand that theres 2 relays (one for each fan?) With the engine running should both fans be running?.. If so, I would think it unlikely that both relays have packed up?

Does anyone know what relays they are and where are they located?...Many thanks...ED

 

I think there's only one fan relay - it's in the main fusebox

the fans both work together - and only when the water temp switch in the rad gets hot enough

it's a common problem for the fusebox to melt thus stopping the fans from working - usual cure is to rewire the fans from scratch ignoring the fusebox completely

 

Cossie rad fan relays are not in the fusebox.
They are buried up behind the dash above passenger footwell.
They are troublesome and often play up.
I rewired mine through a relay with negative switching so they stay on even after engine shut down if needed, with a manual overide switch through another relay, as live controlled negative output.
I would wire in a seperate relay if I were you.

As above. I have rewired soooooo many Cosworth cooling fans I've lost count.

 

the wiring is a load of cock on cossies as said above and they are in the main fuse box under the bonett

 

Tabetha, Can you swap the rad temp switch with another type? So the fans come on at a lower temp? Just and idea.

You can swap switch if you want but it needs to be an appropriate switch for the temp of the thermostat.
All I can say is mine were DEFINITELY NOT IN THE MAIN FUSE BOX, there is a FAN SYMBOL, this is for the HEATER FAN.
I do not know if they are wired permanently as std as I never bothered with it, the std wiring.
Keeping the std rad switch is best idea and will cause no problems if all ok.

Ok thanks Tab. Regarding the relay location behind dash. How do I access the relay? I agree that the fuse in the box is for the heater. Do you know where the fuse is for the rad fans? Tnx again....ED

 

To further clarify the relay/fuse ID/location.. Can some kind person plz run their fan and then pull the relays and advise plz

 

Its happened to both my mates, and both times it was the yellow relay`s in the fuse box under the bonnet


They heat up and go all black inside, both times once we changed them over fans worked perfect

thats why mine hasnt been coming on at all... where do you get these yellow relays from as i need one

 

Yellow relays used on about every ford and every car std DIN pin layout as well.
Got at least forty in my spares box, (must clear out).
Same as the advertised "rare" relays the little ones for mondeos to work indicators for alarm on early ones they are common bit on most cars.
The relays for the fan on mine had a fuse on it in a little holder, but It would be worth trying the above ie pull the relays to see if one duff in the fuse box as yours might be wired the same as theirs and have relay in fuse box, mine is not but seemingly some are, good old ford.
Would be a lot easier than pulling lower dash out to start with.

I can confirm that the relay is in the fuse box! its yellow in colour.. and the 30amp fuse is the far left bottom fuse to the left of the relay!!

I removed the cover of the relay and pressed the switch and the fans came on!! I ran out of time, but now need to investigate the rad switching ciruit...

 

I had this same problem on an XR2i 8v, the fuse box played up and the fan wouldn't come on.

I took it to this really dodgy back street place to get it sorted waaaaay back and he simply by-passed the fuse box, never missed a beat after that, top marks!
