Default Saph cosworth very low oil pressure. Whats wrong???

My father has 91 stg 3 saph that runs really well but oil light comes on on tick over. We fitted oil pressure guage and it reads next to nothing on tickover and barely gets past 20 psi at high revs. The engine does not knock although some lifter noise is present at tickover. could someone please shed some light on the problem . Many thanks Stacey

confirm your prob with another gauge first.

if its still not getin ggod pressure then it sounds like a oil pump at least

has it just gone low ALL of a sudden or after having some work done on it?

is it 2 or 4x4?

Could be a veriety of things;

Blocked oil strainer

Oil pump past its' best

Big end bearings on their last legs

I take it there is enough oil in it and it's the correct grade?!

It's just a process of elimination. You could try a flush and see if that makes any difference, but unlikely. Next step that I'd do is take the sump off and check the strainer for blockages then take it from there.

Don' drive the car mean time as you'll ruin the whole engine.

Best of luck.

Had low pressure since bought a month ago. The swine who sold it to us had took wire off pressure switch and we didnt notice!. Its a 4x4 so would that mean engine out to get to the pump? big ends do not knock.

Oh hey, that's too bad. I feel for you.

Pump is in the sump. So only need to take sump off, however front diff is bolted to sump and front near side drive shaft goes through the sump so these need to come off too. Is a bit of a pain in the arse.

Best of luck. Let me know how you get on.

you are not using mobil 1 0w40 oil are you...? if so, this is far too thin

needs a 10-40 or 10-50 oil, fuly synthetic
