Default My New Capri Project

Well I bought this capri a while ago but hadn't got round to doing anything with it as I was having too much fun in the Dax. Then all of a sudden I needed something to do a 60 mile commute in everyday. Unfortuately the capri only lasted a fortnight before something started to sound very terminal.

So I started by pulling out all the carpets and sound deadening and instantly wished I hadn't. Hopefully I'll get to start on that next week when I'm not working.

Meanwhile I set about with new shiny bits.

I discovered why there was a rather loud grinding noise - must remeber to check the pads on the next car I buy

This explains the shite handling / steering

While it was all in bits I decided to replace the crappy brakes with something slightly larger

No rust in this bit (that I can see anyway) so ready for some sound deadening and a stealth install

Will post up more pics when the welding gets underway and the hubs and uprights come back from the machine shop.

Well I've been fitting the brake kit and new master cylinder from capri sport. The brake kit was easy enough but drilling the the struts for the new bolts was a pain in the arse and unecersarry if the bracket had re-use the original bolts but its done now. Fitted new wheel bearings and had the hub turned down to fit the brake disc (used to bolt to the back of the hub in the old skool style ) The new master cylinder bolted straight onto the servo but it's far from a direct swop as advertised Need to make an adaptor pipe up to take the 12mm output down to the 10mm of the T-piece, which i needed as the cylinder is front x1 and rear x1 unlike the capri one which is 1 x rear and 2x front I'll crack on with that next week hopefully and get some more ARB polybushes ordered as they've sent me the wrong ones - I need LS ones, and not lazer ones.

Still, got the struts fitted and the new brakes on

And got a chance to fit the new wheels

God knows how i'm going to do the ice install though, theres not enough room for kickbuilds, i reckon the mids will sound shit in the doors and will be too big anyway and the wheel well in the boot is a funny shape to fwd cars. And theres not really anywhere to mount the tweets either. Ohh well

So bloody pissed off with CapriSport

I don't mind that they got the polybush sizes wrong, but I do mind that they didn't mention the master cylinder wasn't a direct replacement, and then on two occasions neglected to say they had a simple shiny bolt on solution (which isn't mentioned in their price list). Now i've finally ordered the right bits (and new polybushes) they've told me its all in stock but can't be arsed to send it till monday (i ordered the replacement bits this monday).

I'm bloody fuming cos the car has been off the road for a fortnight because of them

Well I've been busy and managed to get the car rolling again no thanks to capri sport. I couldn't get the fluid reservoir from the capri to bolt to their master cylinder so followed what will did in ppc and ordered one from rimmer bro's which came with the correct reservoir. Got the right polybushes from deflex the next day and took her out for a drive

Handling and brakes are much improved although It could do with going a bit lower at the front and possibly swop some of the polybushes for softer ones as there is a lot of vibration, although it feels very direct which is great. Still set fully soft all round so no adjustment in the damping. Might have to get some adjustable top mounts as I have a feeling the camber is a bit off making it quite easy to lock up the fronts.

New wheels looks good too....

Started on the rust today too, the bodyshop guy next door is talking me through it, although I think he's going to get fed up with me at some point.

Its a bit more extensive than i thought, I peeled all the sound deadening off with a hot air gun and chisel and got the grinder out. I soon discovered that most of the front part of the passenger sill is fiberglass so I cut it all out. Begining to wish I hadn't even started, and theres still some more rust to go.....

Not sure if I can patch that up as theres not that much structural metal left, anyone got any ideas?

u can put in a metal plate dude 2mm thick there usually stiff! bend and cut into shape and weld from both sides will structurally hold it back togather

done it on a few rs turbos and have never had problems after for ridgedyness or any other

Woo, more holes.....

That end of the sill is really complicated, theres about 4 different plates in there, and to cut out the rest of the rot I had to cut the bottom of the wing off. Oops.

Started making some new panels before I forget what needs to go where, just need someone to come over and tack them together for me so I can make the rest and cut the rest of the rot out.....

Not sure why they said they had the 24mm ones in stock then, and then sent me a second set of 22mm ones

On the good side, the welding has started, pic to follow when I'm sober
